Position Information

The Department of Plant Pathology at North Dakota State University invites applicants for a 12-month, tenure-track position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. The appointment is for research (90%) and teaching (10%). The successful candidate will develop an externally-funded research program that addresses economically-important diseases of soybean production in North Dakota. All research approaches and subdisciplines of plant pathology will be considered but a research emphasis on soil-borne diseases caused by oomycetes and fungi is encouraged. Cooperation or collaboration with the NDSU soybean breeding program and interaction with soybean pathologists in the region and nation is expected. The appointee will publish results in refereed journals, interact with and disseminate information to appropriate grower and industry groups, advise graduate students, and teach a course in an area of plant pathology. Service to the university and the profession of plant pathology is expected.

The successful applicant will join a group of 16 diverse and productive faculty who address the needs of the state's agricultural producers and advance the discipline of plant pathology through research, teaching and extension. Soybean is an actively expanding crop in North Dakota (approximately 7 million acres planted in 2021) that is threatened by multiple established and emerging diseases. The department's approach to addressing these threats has resulted in a long and strong history of support by soybean checkoff organizations. Recent facility enhancements available to this position include a state-of-the-art greenhouse complex, recently-remodeled and updated laboratory space, and access to field research locations throughout North Dakota.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum qualifications include: an earned Ph.D. in Plant Pathology or closely related fields; experience with economically-important diseases of soybean or other agronomic crops; demonstrated ability to publish research in high-quality journals appropriate to the discipline; ability to work effectively, cooperatively, and collegially with a diverse population of stakeholder groups, colleagues, students, and scientists from other disciplines; and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred qualifications include: demonstrated ability to conduct research with soil-borne oomycetes and fungi that cause diseases of seed, seedlings, roots, and stems; demonstrated experience conducting applied field-based research; demonstarated ability to develop an independent research program; demonstrated experience with crop commodity groups; and successful experience obtaining extramural funding.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications.
