Job Details
The NDSU Williston Research Extension Center conducts agricultural research to improve crop health and sustainability of our food production system in northwest North Dakota. The plant pathology department focuses on reducing plant disease via practices such as crop rotation, genetic resistance and fungicide selection in durum wheat, chickpeas, peas and lentils. Research on soil health and beneficial bacteria are also a focus. The plant pathology research intern will be responsible for assisting with all aspects of the plant pathology research program which includes both outdoor field research on small crop plots and lab research. The day to day activities of the position include maintaining the field plots in optimal conditions (weeding/mowing alleys), collecting soil or plant samples, assisting with disease ratings, assisting with fungicide applications and conducting lab work such a media preparation, DNA extraction and fungal isolations. Tasks may be specific to the individual hired and their existing skill-set and capabilities. No prior experience in agriculture is required but a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard is. Description, Duties & Responsibilities:
- Maintaining agricultural research trial plots including weeding and mowing to ensure crop health and optimal experiment outcome
- Collect root and soil samples from research trial plots
- Wash roots to prepare for disease rating
- Collecting data on field plots (plant emergence, growth stage, disease notes, pictures, plant biomass and dry weights)
- Assist in maintaining the lab/office in a clean and organized condition
- Help with the annual Field Day events
- Maintaining accurate and complete records of data collected and procedures followed
- Following all safety protocols
Requirements & Competencies:
- High school student
- Over the age of 16
- Valid driver's license or reliable transportation to work
- Positive attitude and willingness to work hard
- Interest in agriculture, research and outdoor work
- Ability to work a full-time schedule in the summer

Hours & Schedule:
- Typically Mon-Fri 8:00am-5:00pm
