Position Information

The NDSU Williston Research Extension Center conducts agricultural research to improve crop health and sustainability of our food production system in northwest North Dakota. The Nesson Valley department focuses on irrigated research practices in northwestern North Dakota and the surrounding area. Research is conducted on crops such as spring wheat, winter wheat, durum, barley, oat, corn, chickpea, field pea, canola, sunflower, flax, safflower, dry bean, potato, and sugarbeet. Research on water use practices is also a focus of the project.

The irrigation research intern will be responsible for assisting with all aspects of the irrigation research program which primarily includes outdoor field research on small crop plots. The day-to-day activities of the position include maintaining the field plots in optimal conditions (weeding/tilling alleys), assisting with plant notes in variety trials, and maintenance of the Nesson Valley grounds. Tasks may be specific to the individual hired and their existing skill set and capabilities. No prior experience in agriculture is required but a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard is.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Assisting with maintenance of agricultural research trial plots including weeding and tilling to ensure crop health and optimal experiment outcome
  • Assisting with data collection on field plots (plant emergence, growth stage, pictures)
  • Assist in maintaining the shop and work areas in a clean and organized condition
  • Help with the annual Field Day events
  • Following all safety protocols

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

Advertised Pay: $13 - $16/hour depending on qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school student
• Over the age of 16
• Valid driver's license or reliable transportation to work
• Positive attitude and willingness to work hard
• Interest in agriculture, research, and outdoor work
• Ability to work a part-time schedule in the summer

Preferred Qualifications:

• College/University student
• Agriculture related degree program
• Relevant work experience
• Ability to work a full-time schedule in the summer
