UMN Morris, Intercultural Education, IAMNCC

The Center for Community Partnerships (Center) at the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) connects UMM assets to small towns in MN. Rural MN has experienced a rapid influx of new immigrants over the last 20 years. Linguistic and cultural differences present challenges to immigrants, educators, and community members. Most access points for culturally responsive educational opportunities and translation and interpretation assistance are located in metro areas and do not meet the unique needs of small towns. The Center has been addressing these challenges since 2010 in Stevens County through an advisory council of educators, immigrants, and UMN Morris faculty; we currently coordinate three programs in the county (English classes, bilingual youth program, and a community translation and interpretation program). In addition, we recently piloted a program to work toward eliminating barriers to higher education for immigrant youth in the county. We wish to improve these programs and share what we have learned and make our programs and support available to rural Minnesotans beyond the county. The VISTA will work with community members and UMN Morris faculty, staff, and students to address educational needs of immigrants in small communities in MN. Competence in Spanish or another language spoken in rural MN required. This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. *Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.* Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.
