Working Title: Student Wheat and Soybean Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Summer Worker

Pay/Hours: $13.00/hour, Full time, approx 40 hours/week,

Locations: Crookston, Moorhead or Morris, MN

Term: Summer 2022 (approx. May 23 - Aug 19, 2022)

About the Position

The students' main responsibility will be to collect wheat pest and disease and soybean pest and disease information in western Minnesota farm fields. This information will benefit Extension and our stakeholders by feeding digital, print and in-person programming in a timely fashion. Employees would spend the majority of their time outside the office and could likely work from home for other tasks such as data entry. Key responsibilities will include:

* Attending spring scout training kickoff and bi-weekly Zoom meetings to learn more about scouting protocols, what to look out for and best practices
* Working independently to travel to farm fields and survey wheat or soybean crops for insect pests and diseases in the assigned scouting region, with the goal of visiting as many fields as possible each week
* Maintaining upkeep of leased UMN fleet vehicle and follow all UMN rules regarding use of this vehicle
* Collecting and delivering data as desired by project leaders
* Communicating with project leaders
* Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

* High School Diploma/GED and enrolling in a college/university Fall 2022. Or a current undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota (any campus) or an undergraduate student at any college/University and must not have graduated Spring 2022.
* Self-starter, motivated to take on new challenges
* Ability to follow detailed instructions
* Ability to spend time in both a vehicle and in farm fields
* Valid driver's license and will be able to use a University fleet vehicle to complete tasks
* Be at least 18 years old
* Must be able to submit proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit a completed religious/medical exemption and agree to comply with the University's testing requirement prior to the start date of this position.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

* One year of experience, or a combination of education and experience to equal to one year in agronomy, entomology, soil science or related field
* An agricultural background in agronomy, soils and soil fertility, integrated pest management, agricultural education, or related field
* Experience in field research
* Experience in agricultural outreach or Extension or similar organizations
* Experience operating of basic farm equipment
