Reporting to the Project Manager, the Lead, Environment is responsible for developing, executing, and completing assessments of information acquired in environmental baseline programs carried out by a multi-disciplinary consulting and project team in support of the Mesaba Project development plan. The Lead, Environment will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team to review, analyze, understand and integrate relevant regulations and procedures governing environmental review, permitting, and data analysis into the planned environmental program work and interact with project stakeholders and key regulatory agency personnel to assist with the environmental review and permitting process. The Lead, Environment will lead the Mesaba Project team in drafting environmental review documents and findings that are in alignment with company goals and agency requirements as well as coordinating environmental and technical field work for mine development permitting for the Mesaba project located near Babbitt, Minnesota.
The Lead, Environment will play a key role in representing Teck in Minnesota and building positive relationships aligned with our values. The successful candidate will work out of Teck's office in Babbitt on a permanent basis and could be based at a mutually agreed location in Minnesota preferably in the Mesabi Iron Range region of Minnesota.
Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on Teck's values on health, safety, environment, and communities. Provide leadership in implementing and adhering to Teck's Health, Safety, Environmental, and Community (HSEC) policy
  • Take a lead role in developing and ensuring a robust environmental program, culture and awareness are developed in the Mesaba Project focusing on all environmental aspects of the project including flora, micro and macro fauna, aquatic environments and ecosystems, and local and regional environmental systems and their interaction with local communities of interest
  • Work with Project Manager and broader project management team to embed environmental and related sustainability and community considerations in all aspects of project development and execution
  • Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary consulting team, including the selection of internal and external subject matter experts (SMEs) and consultants for the project, taking into consideration input from the project and management team, and to ensure overall alignment of work between SME's, consultants and project team members
  • Coordinate and execute environmental data mapping and data collection, environmental monitoring programs and related technical field work
  • Interact with project stakeholders and key regulatory agency personnel to assist in navigating environmental reviews and permitting including establishing a detailed outline of environmental information requirements necessary to meet regulatory stakeholder and regulatory requirements
  • Work with the Project Manager and internal SME's to ensure baseline environmental information, analyses and resulting recommendations meet Teck's project criteria requirements and environmental standards including that which is required to develop a closure plan for the project
  • Develop work plans and budgets that relate to the planned work and project objectives in consultation with consultants and in coordination with project team members
  • Report regularly to the Project Manager and senior management on the status of and risks in relation to project objectives with a particular focus on the interrelationships between environmental baseline data collection, monitoring programs and analysis with other aspects of the project, specifically communities of interest

Qualifications:

  • University degree or equivalent technical designation with related experience in Geoscience and/or Mining, Environmental Sciences, Engineering or Social/Political Sciences
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role
  • Able to build effective working relationships with project technical/engineering teams, to proactively identify and resolve environmental related technical issues
  • Recognized leader with strong organizational, communication, planning, analytical, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to prioritize, work under pressure and manage multi-disciplinary consultant teams with minimal guidance and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people in a variety of roles and positions including senior government staff, technical staff, trades people, special interest groups - takes ownership for listening and understanding
  • Ability to both influence and relate to individuals and achieve results with sensitivity to the personalities and positions involved
  • Excellent communicator (ie, written and verbal) able to assist the Mesaba Project team in a range of public and private settings
