Position Information

Position Description:

The Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University is seeking an Extension Writing Associate to support the potato Extension agronomist in developing content to educate growers, industry, and the public about potato production. The focus will be to develop an electronic potato production book. This position will be responsible for leading the writing, editing and proofing of materials that convey important scientific concepts in a way that can be easily understood. A passion for creating content with attention to detail and thorough research is expected. To support the written content, the position will provide effective communication and coordination with key contributors (subject-matter specialists), create and edit photographs, and assist in developing video storyboards. The ability to work independently and participate in teamwork is needed to check the accuracy of information. Other opportunities include occasionally participating in field research and Extension meetings, traveling to professional meetings, and visiting research and Extension specialists in other states.

The appointment is for 24 months with an extension possible depending on satisfactory performance and funding.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate degree with 5+ years experience or a bachelor's degree with 3+ years experience in Extension, Agriculture Education, Agronomy, English, Communication, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience writing about agriculture related topics.
  • Read, write, and speak fluent English.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in Extension
  • Knowledge of potato production
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Experience in creating and editing photographs
  • Thorough interpersonal communications skills, including active listening, effective collaboration skills and political acumen.
  • Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, social media, web production and other common tools of the trade.
  • Solid project management and organizational skills and ability to accommodate unanticipated revisions and updates.

Advertised Salary: $65,000 +
