This position supports our Expansion Joint Covers (EJC) Business Unit.

SCOPE:

Conducts and engages in assignments related to developing/improving current products and new product developments. Conducts and engages in process improvement projects relating to production (manufacturing), as well as pre and post order processes (office). Participates in research and testing of EJC products.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participates in and/or leads cross-functional teams in New Product Development (NPD) initiatives.
  • Acts as a design consultant to all NPD or Project Teams as required.
  • Locates and interfaces with outside vendors of materials and/or processes as required in support of NPD initiatives.
  • Involved in current product line maintenance and improvements, i.e. component redesign, line extensions, material changes, etc
  • When so assigned, heads up various projects by supervising at the group level the design, construction and testing of pilot models and components, competitive models, quality control checks, etc.
  • Performs or coordinates product testing, either in-house or outside. Prepares testing procedures and documentation as required.
  • Aids in the construction or fabrication of physical prototypes for testing or demonstration purposes.
  • Perform basic costing activities.
  • Assists in analyzing and interpreting data submitted for new products and components as well as modifications affecting standard product
  • Assists and participates in the preparation of drawings, calculations and specifications.
  • Check completed drawings for accuracy of design, dimensions, tolerances, material specification, etc.
  • Performs liaison with domestic and international Purchasing Departments regarding technical information on matters dealing with procurement of special material, specifications and available sources.
  • Liaises with domestic and international operations regarding fire protection materials and testing.
  • Keeps well informed on new developments in the industrial design field through contact with educational institutions, professional societies, manufacturers and trade shows. Also, keep up to date through subscriptions to periodicals, technical papers and journals.
  • Recommends capital expenditures along with sales and production methods for new products.
  • Travel to job sites for new product evaluation or to review existing product issues.
  • Travels both domestically and internationally to interface with architects, interior designers and other external design influences during design development and new products.
  • Interprets building codes, both domestic and international, to determine product requirements as relates to product design.
  • Performs other related activities as assigned by management.
  • Ensures conformance to all aspects of the ISO 14001 standard and Construction Specialties' Environmental Management System (EMS), including its environmental policy while performing job functions that may have a significant impact on the environment.
Qualification: KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE/ EDUCATION: (Minimum Education and/or Experience required)

  • Associates (Bachelors preferred) in Architectural Technology, Engineering Technology and three to five years' experience or equivalent education/experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret data on product design and manufacturing methodology, detailed sketches, designs, specifications and or notes, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from other departments, managers, customers, sales reps, architects and contractors.

  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, MS Office software packages.
  • Innovative/creative attributes.
  • Developed communication skills - both verbal and written.
  • Must be able to work successfully in team efforts - experience in cross functional team leadership and/or participation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a diverse range of people, including the proper handling of emotional situations and effective business relations. Effective use of time and resources to accomplish product development objectives.
  • Knowledge of construction and fabrication methods.
