This Clinical Services Director - Virtual Health role will act as the leader throughout the design, development, and implementation, of high impact virtual health care solutions that improve clinical outcomes, lower total cost of care, and improve the patient and customer experience.

NOTE: This role is not a traditional in-clinic role

Primary Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate must be able to:
  • Serve as the clinical subject matter expert and main point of contact for Optum Labs projects related to virtual medical services
    • Stay current with developments in their field through awareness of real-world applications and innovations as well research publications and
    • Evaluate capabilities and features of current solutions offered by commercial entities or provider organizations
    • Develop an in-depth and nuanced understanding of how and why some virtual health interventions work well while others may not generate desired results
    • Synthesize learnings and be able to communicate them very clearly to shape the development of innovative solutions
    • Ensure adherence to safety standards and healthcare regulations, while identifying opportunities to improve the patient journey
    • Provide clinical review of training protocols and assist in the healthcare credentialing and licensing process for external partner providers
    • Identify and support the voice of the patient in our solution design
  • Partner closely with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., Product, Business Development, Operations, IT, Data Science, Line of Business CMO) in support of piloting and scaling a virtual health offerings
    • Facilitate the development of new solutions through independent pilot design, and building of external vendor relationships to support the innovation process from ideation stage through commercial scale-up
    • Partner within Optum Labs and across the enterprise to define commercialization opportunities enable scale
    • Develop relationships with internal customers across the enterprise to identify pain points in the delivery of virtual health care and opportunities for synergies
    • Identify barriers to success and work collaboratively across departments to produce solutions
    • Coordinate with data science to find new, innovative ways to utilize program data
    • Assist in managing project scope, budget, deliveries, and milestones related to project development
    • Contribute to the development, tracking, and optimization of implicit and explicit value drivers
    • Manage budget and resources effectively to drive value


Skills the role must leverage include strategic thinking, independent design, quantitative analysis, creative problem solving, collaboration, written and verbal communication, and resourcefulness. This role will partner effectively with internal teams such as Operations, IT, Data Science, Research and Clinical , as well as external entities such as start-up companies, enterprise partners, academic partners, physician practices , and other stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced healthcare degree CNP, PA-C, MBA/MHA, MSW, etc.
  • Multi-state licensure to practice
  • 5+ years of experience in operational and implementation experience that includes design, management, and execution of healthcare solutions
  • 2+ years of experience in product or service development in the healthcare industry
  • Experience developing a reputable and holistic Virtual Health Program
  • Experience understanding the market dynamics and evolving program to meet the changing demands
  • Experience managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders simultaneously
  • Leadership experience with cross-functional teams
  • Experience effectively operating with levels of ambiguity - can effectively: cope with change, shift gears, make decisions and act without having the total picture, manage risk and uncertainty

  • Experience working collaboratively with a wide range of individuals at all levels of the organization

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $97,300 to $176,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
