Purpose

The Director, Wind Operations will be expected to bring initiatives for process and organizational development while driving continuous improvements in day-to-day power plant operations. This position reports to the Vice President, Operations. The position will oversee the Wind operations across contracted and clean energy renewable facilities in North America. This Director will be a key member of the overall Operations leadership team with a responsibility to develop team strategy, be able to take a multi-faceted view of the business and identify opportunities to evolve and outperform. The Director will articulate a clear vision for their teams aligned with Corporate Guiding Principles, and Divisional and Department scorecards. The Director will define the KPIs and set targets for the teams.

The Director, Wind Operations will have day-to-day management responsibility for the work force, operating and maintaining the Liberty Power power generating facilities in accordance with industry standards and best practices, and approved Liberty Power policies, processes and procedures to ensure revenue maximization and profitability expectations of the asset. Working in conjunction with and as a direct contributor to Asset Strategy, they will own the safety of all employees in the Wind Operations team. The Director is ultimately accountable for the operating performance of the Renewables facilities consistent with the approved business plans and operating and maintenance budgets. Manage Wind Operations with a customer oriented mindset in delivering on results as specified by the customer, Asset Strategy. The Director Wind Operations is expected to conduct all matters in a manner consistent with the Liberty Power's Corporate Values of Quality, Efficiency and Care including but not limited to the following:

  • Manage operations in accordance with an approved Operations and Maintenance Plan and budget.

  • Ensure Long Term Integrity of Liberty Power's Operating Wind Assets.
  • Manage operations in accordance with an approved O&M plan and budget.
  • Identify and with approval, implement methods and means to reduce operating and maintenance expenses and maximize revenues.
  • Ensure the Liberty Renewables facilities are operated in accordance with dispatch notices from the Independent System Operator, interconnecting utility, or as instructed by Liberty Power Energy Services.
  • Direct the management of day to day relationships with the contractual requirements of facility stakeholders.

Accountabilities

  • Achieving agreed upon Liberty Renewables facility production, availability, and safety objectives.
  • Develop the Liberty Renewables maintenance strategy in collaboration with Asset Strategy to align the business drivers and the long term expected financial returns.
  • Preparation of annual operating and maintenance plans and budgets, OPEX and CAPEX (including labour, R&M and admin). Meeting/exceeding agreed upon Liberty Renewables operating cost goals. Developing, justifying and implementing operating cost containment/reduction programs that align with availability, overall asset financial targets as well as Asset Strategy's short term and long term asset strategy.
  • Preparation of business cases for all CAPEX, unplanned and non-routine OPEX projects, including but not limited to OT labour, R&M and facility admin required.
  • Developing and implementing a succession plan for the operations and management team responsible for power generating facilities.
  • Working collaboratively with the Liberty Renewables Asset Strategy teams to realize short and long term operating profit and cash flow targets including the deployment of required capital
  • Work closely with the Liberty Liberty Power Business Services (LABs) Director of Environmental, Health and Safety leader to achieve standardized environmental, health & safety policies and procedures across Liberty Renewables.
  • In conjunction with Asset Strategy, work effectively with the Liberty Renewables Business Development group in the transition of newly acquired or constructed assets into Operations, including definition of what is required by when in the transitions.
  • Collaborate with the Asset Strategy, Enterprise Risk Management and Internal Audit groups in the identification, assessment and mitigation of operational risks across the Liberty Renewables fleet
  • Demonstrate leadership and drive in shifting Liberty Renewables' culture to one of operational excellence inspiring employees to embrace the Liberty Renewables Way.
  • Drive operational excellence through the development of best practices in the areas of operating, maintenance, safe work practices, and risk management strategies and methods. Implementation and use of Liberty Renewables' enterprise asset management system (CMMS/EAM)
  • Use of Liberty Renewables' systems to plan, execute, track and explain any variances to financial/operational results
  • Ongoing performance assessment and management for each of the facilities
  • Work as key member of capital allocation committee to ensure appropriate expenditures as required for facility expansion and maintenance
  • Support change through the justification, implementation plan, and execution of an Liberty Renewables wide CMMS/EAM, Land management, and any other new systems proposed
  • In conjunction with Asset Strategy, support Business Development in the evaluation of operational considerations in the analysis of potential acquisitions and development projects.
  • As integral members of the Asset Teams, ongoing dialogue of day to day operations, identification and mitigation/action of risks and opportunities (R & O's), and a focus on continuously improving the operation and profitability of Liberty Renewables assets
  • This position will require travel of up to 50% of the individual's time, depending on base location.

Education and Experience

  • Assume overall management responsibility for the work force dedicated to operation of all Liberty Renewables Wind generating facilities.
  • Engage LABs EH&S group to provide support to ensure all field operations are conducted in the spirit and letter of Liberty Renewables environmental, health and safety policies.
  • Work collaboratively with the Asset Strategy group in support of profit, cashflow and capital expenditure goals
  • Work as a key member of the capital allocation committee to ensure appropriate expenditures as required for facility expansion and maintenance.
  • Support Asset Strategy in the re-negotiation and re-structuring of material project agreements, off-take sales agreements, land tenure agreements, etc. for such agreements as necessary in the oversight of asset management.
  • Support Business Development as needed in the evaluation of operational considerations in the analysis of potential acquisitions and requirements of development projects.
  • Provide managerial leadership to the Wind operating staff within Liberty Renewables including acting as primary interface between Liberty Renewables senior management and Oakville head office functions with the field staff and the Director's Regional Managers
  • Provide change management leadership both within the field and facilities as well as within Oakville head office as it relates to Operations
  • Work with Human Resources in the development of succession planning for all significant managerial positions within Liberty Renewables operations group.
  • Work with the Regional Managers and Asset Strategy to prepare the annual operating and capital budgets for the Liberty Renewables Wind generating facilities and support the quarterly re-forecasting of such budgets.
  • Ensure operation and maintenance of Liberty Renewables Wind generating facilities is performed in accordance with the approved operating budget.
  • Review and provide explanatory comments for monthly profit and loss financial statements as it relates to approved operating revenue and expenses for the Liberty Renewables Wind generating facilities including references to Key Performance Indices (KPI's) and analysis of variances from budget and forecasts.
