Position Information

The North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (NDAES) is looking for an experienced data and software engineer to join the NDAES Big Data Pipeline Team. Created on June 15, 2016, the Big Data Pipeline Team started as a service team to support the ND Agricultural Experiment Station breeding programs. Today the team is growing and expanding its support the data needs of other NDAES units on the NDSU campus and Research Extension Centers (RECs) located across the state. The data and software engineer will take a lead role in the development of a solid infrastructure for data management and its use in research and business-essential analytics, as well as in the development of tools for reporting metrics to stakeholders. The incumbent will be responsible for the development, integrity, and maintenance of our NDAES data infrastructure and enable proper interconnection across databases and applications developed internally within and across research teams. Working closely with technical testing and research groups will be imperative for developing useful analytical applications.

This is a full-time position that will have significant impact on agricultural research at NDSU and, ultimately, agricultural across the State of North Dakota.

Essential Functions:
  • Apply deep understanding of traditional data warehousing, data structures, and tools to arrange data into optimal data structures that handle data from different sources, functions, and processes.
  • Work with third-party companies/vendors, and contractors to implement, configure, and maintain solutions and systems.
  • Design and maintain data storage systems and access tools.
  • Build, deploy, and maintaining software applications that support the research organizations across the NDAES.
  • Contribute to the development of new applications, algorithms, and capabilities that will enable reaching research goals.
  • Design, develop, validate, deploy, and support analytical solutions across the NDAES research goals.
  • Programming and use of various libraries for task automation, calling APIs, preparing, and transforming data for analysis and digital transformations.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information science, engineering, mathematics, or related technical discipline.
  • 3+ years of industry/academic experience in software development, data engineering, or related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of programming and coding languages such as C#, Java, Python, R, SQL, among others.
  • Experienced in analysis, design, coding, development, testing, and maintenance of large data warehouse systems, T-SQL, report creation, MLOps, and handling various heterogeneous source systems.
  • Experience with APIs used for data integration.
  • An understanding of a wide range of data systems and platforms, such as data warehouses and data lakes, as well as relational databases.
  • Experience building and operating highly available, distributed systems of data extraction, data ingestion, landing zone, monitoring, organization, and processing of large data sets.
  • Experience with data transformation, pipeline monitoring/quality/backfill, and big data technologies
  • Experience with version control and source code control systems.
  • Must be able to know the basics of deploying machine learning algorithms.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in written and oral communication in English.
  • Working well in a diverse team environment with multiple stakeholders across the NDAES system

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with agricultural/biological organisms' datasets, experimental designs, and mixed model analyses.
  • Experience with cloud computing systems, specifically cloud data pipeline development and modern data warehouse architectures.
  • Experience with big data processing systems such as Hadoop, Spark, or Databricks.
  • Experience designing and implementing analytical data models.Experience with NoSQL databases.

Advertised Salary: $75,000+/year
