What are the qualifications to become a school bus driver?
Is training available?
If selected, applicants will be entered into a training program that includes behind-the-wheel training and classroom instruction. Bus driver trainees will be paid $14.50/hour for up to 30 hours of driver training. After completion of training, applicants are entered into a paid mentoring program.
What are the hours?
Hours vary widely due to the variety of route lengths. Morning hours range from 6:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. Afternoon hours range from 2:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. New drivers are assigned as substitute drivers and may apply for contract route openings as they occur. Bemidji Area Schools are in session for 173 days during the school year. As this job is linked directly to the school's calendar, our drivers enjoy every weekend and holiday off!
What is the starting wage for school bus drivers?
The wage for substitute drivers is $20.14 per hour. Anyone that drives both an A.M. and P.M. shift within the same day is paid an additional $4.50 per hour as a split shift differential.
The starting wage for contract route drivers is $20.14 per hour. Anyone that drives both an A.M. and P.M. shift within the same day are paid an additional $4.50 per hour as a split shift differential.
Are there any benefits offered?
Contract drivers accumulate 10 days of sick leave per year. After 5 years continuous employment, contract drivers receive longevity pay. Drivers that have been continuously employed for three months and are contracted to drive four or more hours each duty day are eligible for health insurance. Bus drivers also participate in the Minnesota Public Employees Retirement Association.

What are the qualifications to become a school bus driver?
- Pass a Pre-Employment drug screen.
- Pass a criminal background check
- Pass a physical examination.
- Pass a series of written examinations (General Knowledge class "B" CDL, Air Brake, Passenger and School Bus endorsements) and pass a road test in a school bus.
