Position description
The Community Paramedic is responsible for delivering high quality primary care and medical evaluation for low, medium and high acuity patients in a variety of clinical and community settings. The Community Paramedic must demonstrate clinical competency and compassion in providing for the physical and emotional needs of patients. The Community Paramedic works autonomously and must have excellent judgment and be able to prioritize decisions and act quickly in the best interest of the patient. Must be self-disciplined, able to develop patient rapport, maintain safe distance, and recognize and utilize communication unique to diverse multicultural groups and ages within those groups. Must be able to function independently at optimum level in a non-structured environment that is constantly changing.

What Services can Mayo Clinic Community Paramedics Provide?
  • Health and Social Determinants of Health assessments.
  • Wellness Visits.
  • Chronic disease monitoring and education.
  • Medication administration, both intravenous and oral.
  • Medication review and education.
  • Immunizations and vaccinations.
  • Laboratory specimen (blood, urine, etc.) collection and point-of-care laboratory testing.
  • Moderately complex point of care laboratory testing.
  • Point of Care Ultrasound Exams (bladder, vascular, lung).
  • Hospital and emergency department discharge follow-up care.
  • Minor medical procedures (eg wound care) approved by the Ambulance Medical Director.
  • Connecting patient to other healthcare, social support, and wellness resources both within the clinical and community settings.

Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Certified as a paramedic. At least two years of experience as a Paramedic or a combination of three years of experience as an EMT or Paramedic.

Additional qualifications
Associate or baccalaureate degree is preferred. Must be proficient in English; must have the ability to read, write and speak English.

License or certification
Current certification as a Minnesota Community Paramedic or willingness to begin the training program upon hire. Current certification as a Nationally Registered Paramedic as well as current Minnesota and/or Wisconsin Paramedic licensure/certification. Current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR certification and ACLS. Current ITLS or PHTLS and PALS certifications. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record in accordance with Mayo Clinic Policy.

Schedule details
Each pay period they are 5 day shifts and 1 shift as a Paramedic on ground operations, all shifts are 12 hours.

Weekend schedule
There will be a weekend rotation, weekends shifts are split between all Community Paramedic team members.
