Position Summary:
This role is responsible for providing leadership and direction for Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) function including the budget process, financial forecasting, business segment reporting, capital planning, competitive intelligence, strategic direction and other finance initiatives. The leader in FP&A will play a key role in working with the CFO and the Alerus Leadership Council to provide strategic and tactical leadership on major activities of the organization. This person will have the ability to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization from the Board of Directors to Leadership Council to Staff on various projects and activities and will have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Essential Responsibilities:
Job Function 1: Budget and Forecasting - 40%
  • Manage the coordination, development and implementation of annual budget and interim forecasts and stressing of various analysis.
  • Develop allocation models to improve budgeting and business analysis.
  • Ensure budgeting and forecasting is aligned with business and strategic planning.

Job Function 2: Business/Market Segment Analysis and Reporting - 30%
  • Develops reports, models, and other financial analytic tools to measure, forecast and analyze financial performance and enhance budget vs actual reporting.
  • Prepare monthly financial reporting packages, including dashboards, trends and other financial reports for business leaders highlighting and explaining variances to budget.
  • Responsible for business unit profitability analysis, including segment, geographic, branch and business units.
  • Develops and maintains funds transfer pricing models to fairly allocate funding sources between business units.
  • Prepares and presents various management and board presentations.
  • Review and ensure all external reporting comply with SEC and GAAP standards.
  • Help coordinate with the accounting team that all external reporting is completed on a timely basis. Assist in the creation and review of all external reports.

Job Function 3: Competitive Intelligence - 10%
  • Utilize resources such as S&P Global / SNL and Bloomberg to analyze how Alerus' financial performance compares to peers.
  • Create tracking tools to measure relative financial performance.
  • Monitor industry data to understand how Alerus is growing relative to the macro environment.

Job Function 4: Merger and Acquisition Analysis - 5%
  • Assist the CFO in the review and analysis of potential merger and acquisition candidates.
  • Responsible for the financial analysis on acquisition targets by running models and presenting results to the acquisition team.
  • Analyzes capital considerations and makes recommendations regarding the appropriate capital structure and requirements for acquisitions.
  • Maintain list of possible acquisition targets and update financial information on a quarterly basis.

Job Function 5: Alerus/Department Support and Teamwork - 15%
  • Ensures successful implementation and wide-spread use of the AXIOM reporting system.
  • Works with Alerus leadership council of the various business segments on special financial related projects.
  • Engage with regulators and internal/external business partners to understand the impact of regulatory changes.
  • Participate on special committees with goal of continued earnings per share growth of at least 10% a year.
  • Lead FP&A staff to accomplish the aforementioned responsibilities.
  • Support new business initiatives as needed.

Position Requirements:
Qualifications:
  • 12 or more years of Financial Services industry experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting, MBA preferable.
  • Significant budget and forecasting experience and regulatory knowledge.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and SEC reporting standards.
  • Proficient with all Microsoft products including Excel, Access, Word, and Power Point.

Physical Demands - Must be met with or without a reasonable accommodation:
  • Extended periods of time sitting at a desk and using office equipment.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer/laptop for approximately 8 hours per day.
  • Extended time is spent reviewing physical and electronic documents.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
  • Periodically, may also do light lifting of supplies and materials which weighs in at approximately 20 lbs.
  • Will spend most of time in an indoor environment.
