The NDSU Extension state 4-H activities coordinator will plan, develop, coordinate, facilitate, manage and supervise statewide opportunities to engage youth, including the oversight of program and camping opportunities at the North Dakota 4-H Camp in Washburn, ND. This is a full-time position based in Bismarck, North Dakota, with responsibilities statewide The 4-H activities coordinator is a member of a statewide Extension 4-H and Youth development team responsible for creating innovative learning experiences that empower North Dakotans to improve ther lives and communities through science-based education.

Responsibility for the Work of Others:

Responsible for ensuring that volunteers carrying out the duties/functions with any 4-H statewide program are following all NDSU Extension, ND 4-H Youth Development, and natinal 4-H procedures, record-keeping and expected behaviors.

Responsibilities Include:

This position includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities

Provide support for the North Dakota 4-H Camp to include:
  • Coordinate, manage, hire, train and oversee camp staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with camp facility manager on camp calendar, rentals, and other activities.
  • Contact parents of participating youth in emergency situations and be available as an emergency contact for counselors, parents, and campers.
  • Update and maintain camp materials and policies as needed.
  • Develop a camp schedule.
  • Coordinate transportation (buses and camp state fleet vehicles) for camps.
  • Manage and provide financial gidance on the camp program budget and secure grants for programming needs.
  • Serve as the camp historian, and present history at camp.
  • Engage Extension personnel, the 4-H Foundation Board, and other camp stakeholders on opportunities to utilize 4-H camp year round.
  • Work towards Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards to ensure facility becomes compliant and certified.
  • Coordinate with the 4-H Foundation facility manager facility committe chair for supply, equipment, inventory and other facility needs.
  • Manage camp registration system and provide technical support to counties through UltraCamp

Provide leadership in the development and implementation of statewide 4-H activities to include:
  • Explore options to develop and create multiple events, activities and camping experiences across the state to help youth build essential life skills, create opportunities to spark interest in various career fields, and provide opportunities for youth to thrive in different social environments.
  • Provide ideas to utilize the Luhman Ranch property, located in south-western North Dakota
  • Explore options for virtual or hybrid year-round activities, events and camps in partnership with NDSU Extension offices, NDSU Departments and NDSU Research E xtension Centers
  • Seek ways to collaborate with other youth organizations.
  • Cultivate relationships with media outlets and resources to effectively communicate and market 4-H activities, events and camps.
  • Coordinate with the 4-H Foundation Executive Director to address needs and share programming efforts at the Luhman Ranch property and the ND 4-H Camp property.
  • Develop and manage website and social media updates related to future events, activities and camps.
  • Develop promotional materials for events, activities and camps to be marketed year-round.
  • Support recruitment and retention efforts.

  • Ability to conduct oneself professionally, be self-directed in the work environment and work flexible and extended hours.
  • Participate in professional development experiences offered by the NDSU Extension and other entities as appropriate.
  • Be self-directed with minimal supervision.
  • Some weekend and evening work is required.
  • Travel statewide is required. Overnight trips will be required on occasion for meetings, 4- H youth development activities, and professional development.
  • Be an active learner to keep relevant with new teaching strategies, advances in the professional development field, technology, news and with related research.
  • Perform other duties assigned in support of Extension programming.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, communication, business, human development or a degree related to the responsibilities for this position.
  • Experience recruiting and managing volunteers.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use Microsoft office programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups and through mass media.
  • Two years of demonstrated success in program development and delivery to diverse audiences and communities including but not limited to race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences;
  • Familiarity with various ethnic and socioeconomic audiences, an interest and ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to the principles of diversity.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment, etc. up to 40 to 50 lbs.
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree related to responsibilities for the position.
  • Five or more years of demonstrated work experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating camping experiences for young people.
  • Experience with NDSU Extension and the 4-H Youth Development Program.
  • Experience in securing grants, sponsorships, or other funding.
  • Five or more years of demonstrated excellence in teaching youth and working with youth.

Work Schedule:

Advertised Salary:

$46,200 to $62,000
