Road Construction Inspector and Snow and Ice Driver

This is a multi-level posting.  If this position is not filled by qualified applicants at the Transportation Generalist Senior (TGS) level, the position will be filled at the Transportation Generalist (TG) level. If this position is not filled by qualified applicants at the Transportation Generalist level, the position will be filled at the Transportation Associate level.

An employee in this class performs daily assigned and routine work such as routine testing and project documentation, AND assisting with the preparation of construction plans according to MnDOT design standards, AND assists in the maintenance and operation of snow and ice control to ensure safe and clear roadways.

Transportation Generalist Senior Minimum Qualifications:

The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist Senior level can be achieved with TWO years of experience in a combination of the following areas:

• A minimum of one year of experience in contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction) activities or related activities;

AND

• A minimum of six months experience in performing design activities which must include computer aided drafting and design (CADD).

•Note:  A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees:  Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

•Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

•Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction within 6 months of hire.

•Bit Street Level 1 -  or ability to obtain within one year of hire/placement

•Concrete Field Level 1 -  or ability to obtain within one year of hire/placement

Transportation Generalist Minimum Qualifications:                  

The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with one year of experience in a combination of the following areas:

• Experience in contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction), bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits, planning, pre-design, right of way, road\surface/roadside maintenance, snow/ice, surveys, and/or traffic engineering.

AND

• A minimum of six months experience in performing design activities which must include computer aided drafting and design (CADD)

OR

•A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees:  Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

AND

• Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Other Requirements: 

Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction within 6 months of hire.

Applicants are required to take a math and reading assessment.  A passing score of level 5 or higher on the math portion of the computerized test and level 5 or higher on the computerized reading test.  Passing scores are valid for five years.  The job offer is contingent on passing a basic math and reading test.
