Position Information

This position provides technical safety office and field support for the Environmental Health and Safety responsibilities of the unit. This would include testing of laboratory safety infrastructure such as eyewashes, safety showers, and chemical fume hoods, addressing indoor air quality concerns, monitoring and documenting asbestos abatement activity on campus, auditing campus storm sewers for proper function, and providing guidance and training on hazardous materials/dangerous goods transportation and shipping.

Select Responsibilities:
  • Test eyewashes, safety showers, and chemical fume hoods, and maintain performance data on this equipment. Work with Facilities Management personnel to see that safety infrastructure that is not operating at desired specifications is repaired.
  • Assist with Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) assessments as necessary using monitoring and testing equipment, interviewing staff, and assisting with planning to address the issues.
  • Provide guidance and training on hazardous materials/dangerous goods shipping using Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) requirements.
  • Maintain professional competency and education requirements of the position
  • Assist with the development and delivery of various topics of safety training.
  • Be able to provide backup and support for hazardous materials response and disposal, assisting with spills and incident mitigation when requested.
  • Provide basic laboratory safety training to visiting university and high school students.
  • Work safely at all times, following all safety rules and guidelines, identify unsafe working conditions and provide guidance and encouragement to anyone working in an unsafe manner.

Work Schedule:

Five days per week, 40 hours per week. Emergency responses or extraordinary events my entail being called upon occasionally after normal working hours or on weekends.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or other natural science
  • Working knowledge and understanding of chemistry, radioactive materials, working with biohazards, or hazardous materials management
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with no more than three moving violations in the past two years
  • Must be able to successfully complete the NDSU Radiation Safety Short Course, the 40 hour HAZWOPER training, DOT and/or IATA Dangerous Goods Shipping training, and 24 hour Asbestos Inspector training within six months of hire and periodic refresher training as a condition of continued employment
  • Ability to understand and use technical equipment associated with the areas of responsibility of the position
  • Ability to research new technologies and their related safety issues
  • Ability to pass a fit test for respirator usage
  • Must have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • One or more years of directly related experience in a full-time capacity or equivalent
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NDSU campus and facilities
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of applications, especially Outlook and Excel
  • Familiarity with chemical inventory software systems

Physical Demands:

Must frequently be able to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, climb stairs, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, taste and smell, and be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
