JOB SPECIFICS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an approved 18-24 month technical college or two-year college degree in Land Surveying or Civil Engineering or two years of related work experience in Land Surveying or Civil Engineering.RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a special project Survey Technician position responsible for performing land surveying field and office work in the Survey Division (County Surveyor) of the Public Works Department. Some examples include US Public Land Survey monument maintenance; boundary retracement surveys; right of way plat surveys; construction surveys; interpretation of legal (land) descriptions; coordinate geometry computations; drafting and mapping utilizing CAD software; records research; document preparation; subdivision plat review; and possibly leading other survey technicians in the field and office assignments. This position will be filled at the Survey Technician I or Survey Technician II classification depending on the successful applicant's relevant experience and education. Applicants with all levels of relevant experience and education are encouraged to apply.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
  • Paid experience operating industry-standard survey instruments to establish the geodetic position of existing points;
  • Paid experience utilizing CAD or GIS software tools to prepare, analyze, or review survey or geographic data;
  • Paid work experience researching publicly available land records and performing survey fieldwork to perpetuate and retrace real property boundaries;
  • Paid work experience examining and/or preparing subdivision plats and/or Common Interest Community plats in compliance with state statutes and established standards;
  • Paid work experience helping explain or train others such as the public, students, or coworkers, on land surveying or land record interpretation questions or topics

  • HOURS / DAYS: 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Thursday. Work schedules (hours and days) and location are subject to change based on department needs.

    ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $22.95 Hourly JOB SUMMARY

    This is an entry-level Survey Technician position requiring basic knowledge of land surveying, computer-aided design (CAD), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Responsibilities include field assignments and office assignments depending on daily needs. Performs land surveying fieldwork and research, CAD drafting, mapping, and other related functions. Work requires interpreting property legal descriptions and performing coordinate geometry for survey computations, parcel mapping, and plat review.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    ??? Performs survey fieldwork to establish horizontal and vertical survey control and gather various forms of survey data. Operates survey instruments; compiles and checks survey field records. Sets boundary corner and highway right-of-way monuments. Performs construction staking and topographic surveys for county infrastructure projects.

    ??? Tests survey equipment to assure accuracy and reliability. Conducts preventive maintenance; cleans and performs minor repairs and/or adjustments to survey equipment. Responsible for supplies, materials, and equipment necessary to perform survey fieldwork.

    ??? Independently sets up work zone traffic control systems for various survey projects to ensure the safety of survey personnel, survey equipment, and the public.

    ??? Researches survey records, evidence, and field notes pertaining to the United States Public Land Survey System (USPLS). Performs survey fieldwork necessary to perpetuate and maintain USPLS corners. Compiles evidence for analysis and Certificates of Location of Government Corner.

    ??? Indexes and files various survey and land information records. Maintains various survey and land information databases and section worksheets.

    ??? Examines proposed subdivision plats for mathematical accuracy and compliance with state statutes, professional standards, and county policies. Reviews findings with supervisor and prepares reports to surveyors outlining required or recommended action.

    ??? Maintains section worksheets and the Washington County parcel map database utilizing CAD/GIS software. Performs various checking and verification procedures to ensure accuracy, security, and compliance with professional standards.

    ??? Provides other departments or agencies with training and/or assistance on legal descriptions and other land-related matters. Explains land surveying practices to the public and other agencies and provides them with survey and land information. Participates in special survey and land information mapping projects and/or applications.

    ??? Performs other duties as assigned.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Job duties consist of the occasional lifting of up to 80 pounds. Frequent carrying, pulling, and pushing of up to 20 pounds; up to 80 pounds occasionally. Duties include working in all weather conditions. Work involves performing the following movements on an occasional to frequent basis; walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, crouching, reaching up, reaching down, reaching out, and standing. Equipment includes, but not limited to: survey instruments, jackhammer, sledgehammer, shovels, a post hole digger, hand tools, truck, snowmobile, and ATV. Exposures include, but are not limited to weather, dust, dirt, insects, and pests. Additional physical/mental requirements may not be listed above, but are inherent to performing the position's essential functions.

    Office duties are sedentary with occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs. Frequent wrist and finger manipulation due to a high concentration of computer work. Equipment used includes computers, scanners, plotters, other survey office equipment, telephone, calculator, and copy machines. Requires the ability to distinguish between the colors of red, brown, green, blue, yellow, and shades of all colors used in computer mapping.
