The Building Maintenance Worker is responsible to perform skilled work installing, maintaining and repairing Wadena County buildings, equipment and grounds.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs repairs and adjustments to plumbing, water lines, HVAC, electrical wiring and equipment, furniture, shelves, doors and windows and various machines.
  • Makes drawings for estimates and requisitions of materials for building projects.
  • Makes inspections of buildings and recommends improvement and repairs.
  • Operates and maintains trucks, skid loader and other ground care and snow removal equipment.
  • Performs custodial duties.
  • Performs grounds work to enhance appearance of landscape and maintain health of plants.
  • Loads and unloads deliveries for county offices.
  • Installs, repairs and replaces door locks.
  • Provides work direction and oversees temporary workers including CEP and STS workers.
  • Assists with planning and completion of major building projects.
  • Acquires estimates for building and grounds repairs.
  • Repairs and constructs walls.
  • Pours cement floors, sidewalks, curbs and aprons.
  • Assists with fire protection and training on fire equipment and safety.
  • Cleans sidewalks and parking lots including rubbish removal, snow removal and ice control.
  • Orders all paper and janitorial supplies.
  • Schedules vehicle repair and maintenance; creates and maintains vehicle reports.
  • Performs computer data entry.
  • Performs minor custodial duties, as needed.
  • Attends training, educational and staff meetings as assigned.

While these are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as part of their role with the County.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and skill in proper and safe maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and relevant Department of Labor laws and requirements.
  • Knowledge of building codes and commercial construction practices.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools and perform work requiring lifting, using ladders and scaffolding and to function in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to instruct and direct unskilled helpers, including inmates.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret a variety of instructions and work specifications furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to maintain accurate files and records.
  • Ability to use computers and software.
  • Ability to respond to calls for service outside normal work schedule.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision with general autonomy in determining how objectives are achieved
  • Ability to perform a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents and moderate analytical ability in adapting standard methods to fit facts and conditions, using generally prescribed procedures.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain relationships with department staff, other departments, contractors, the general public etc. to relay basic information or facts

Education and Experience

  • Requires a high school degree or equivalent and two years technical school or specialized training; and
  • At least one year relevant experience;
  • Or equivalent combination of training/experience.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Minnesota Class B Commercial Driver’s License

Physical and Mental Requirements

This job typically requires: sitting, standing, walking, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, talking, driving, lifting, hearing, typing, and seeing. This position is generally moderate duty and may require the exertion up to 60 pounds of force and intermittently ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move objects up to 60 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a variety of environments including office, shop, vehicles and outdoors.  May be exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, chemicals, oil, extreme temperatures, intense noises, travel and work activities requiring constant precautions and safety considerations.
