Position Description & Details

The postdoctoral fellow will conduct research on a topic closely related to the project funded by a DOE Grant obtained by the supervisor, Dr. Sun, and her collaborators for 2021-2024. This collaborative project aims to develop efficient near-infrared emitting transition-metal complexes based on earth abundant transition metals copper (Cu), tungsten (W), and molybdenum (Mo) via a combination of experimental, computational, and machine learning approach. The experimental part of the project requires highly challengeable synthesis and spectroscopic studies. Only a researcher with a Ph.D. degree who has an extensive training, knowledge and experience in synthesis and optical spectroscopy can carry out the research. As such, the special research focus of the project and the required skills/responsibilities are the reasons why the job exists.

Screening will begin 12/13/21

Years of experience: Five years INCLUDING your Ph.D. research training or Zero years after Ph.D.

Position Description & Details

Duty 1, 70 percent of time: Design, synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopic studies of Cu(I), Mo(0) and W(0) complexes with near-IR emission.
  • Search and review scientific literature on the related project topics. Report updates on literature review at group meetings and at one on one meetings with the supervisor.
  • Design, synthesis, and characterization (NMR, HRMS, elemental analysis, or single X-ray crystallography) of Cu(I), Mo(0) and W(0) complexes with diimine ligands that emit in the near-IR spectral regions.
  • Perform systematic photophysical studies of the synthesized complexes using UV-vis absorption, emission, and transient absorption spectroscopy.
  • Explore the structure-property correlations in the synthesized complexes.
  • Report the obtained results in the form of oral presentations (power point format) in group meetings and written weekly and monthly reports (word formats) with figures prepared in ACS-journal format. In the written monthly reports, all figures and tables should have detailed captions; methodology should be clearly presented, and main results should be well explained. Such reports are expected to be updated and discussed with the supervisor monthly.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly group meetings. Attend all Chemistry Departmental weekly Seminars.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. At least two published papers as the first author each year.
  • Share obtained results with the scientific community via presentations at local and national scientific conferences.

  • Position Description & Details

Duty 2, 20 percent of time: Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in their research activities.
  • Help students, both graduates and undergraduates, in acquiring basic research trainings, such as literature search, data acquisition and analysis, and basic synthesis, purification, and characterization trainings in the labs.
  • Training students in water-free and air-free reactions.
  • Training students in using instruments, such as NMR, HRMS, UV-vis, fluorometer, and laser flash photolysis spectrometers.
  • Instruct students on safe-operation of experiments.

  • Position Description & Details

Duty 3, 5 percent of time: Professional development and synergetic activities
  • Attend training programs offered by Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at NDSU. These sessions are offered once or several times per semester and cover everything from the strategic (devising a long-term research agenda, separating one's own work from one's advisor's work) to the tactical (preparing a project, a budget, filling out forms) issues for developing further academic or industry career.
  • Participate and help in organizing scientific meetings, workshops, and meetings with collaborators initiated by the supervisor.
  • Actively participate in one-on-one meetings with seminar speakers and visitors of the Department Chemistry and Biochemistry at NDSU. The supervisor will help in organizing such meetings.
  • Review scientific papers submitted for publications in scientific journals. The supervisor will refer review assignment from a journal to a postdoc in order to extend the postdoc's experience in reviewing scientific papers.

  • Position Description & Details

Duty 4, 5 percent of time: Work Safely.

Follow safety rules, help identify unsafe working conditions, stop co-workers who are working in an unsafe manner.

    Minimum Requirements

    Ph.D. in Chemistry

Familiar with Office suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Familiar with Origin software for data analysis and plotting.

    Preferred Qualifications

Major field of study: Organic/inorganic chemistry

Specialized knowledge: Organic synthesis including air-free reactions, coordination chemistry, optical spectroscopy.

Required work experience: Extensive experience in organic synthesis especially on coordination compounds and spectroscopic techniques.

    Additional Information

Hazardous working conditions: Will need to use flammable, oxidative, corrosive, and pyrophoric chemicals. Warning signs and safety trainings are required before starting working in the labs.

Frequency of occurence of unusual or hazardous working conditions: 10 percent of time.
