Position Information

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Animal Sciences Department at North Dakota State University is seeking to fill a 12- month, tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor position with expertise in value-added meat science. The department is seeking a quality individual to engage as part of a diverse, multi-disciplinary team. The department includes 25 faculty members whose specialties encompass physiology, reproduction, nutrition, genetics, meat science, livestock management, and human-animal interactions. The Department of Animal Sciences has three degree designations; Animal Science, Equine Science, and Veterinary Technology (further detail regarding the department is summarized below). The successful candidate is expected to possess the ability to succeed in the promotion and tenure process through the pursuit of scholarly activities within the scope of their appointment which will encompass 70% research and 30% teaching. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will:
  • Establish and manage a high-impact research program focused on value-added muscle food innovation and (or) value-added meat-animal product development.
  • Coordinate a combination of teaching and workforce training that may include undergraduate/graduate courses in live animal and meat evaluation and muscle-food product development as well as participate and (or) develop outreach activities in consumer/community education.
  • Collaborate with other faculty, scientists and Extension educators within the department and across the university system on research programs related to fresh meat and value-added muscle food innovation.
  • Advise and actively participate in graduate student training.
  • Serve as academic advisor for animal science undergraduates.
  • Serve the department, college, and university in such capacity as (for example) student club advisor, recruitment and retention of undergraduate students, and as a representative of responsible animal agriculture.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph. D. in meat-animal sciences or related field.
  • Evidence of plans or ability to pursue research in the focus areas of muscle foods with emphasis on fresh meat and (or) processed meat.
  • Ability to teach Meat Science and related courses at the graduate and undergraduate level.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Evidence of an appreciation for the mission of the modern Land Grant University.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a diverse team atmosphere.
  • Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding.
  • Published in peer-reviewed scientific publications
  • Demonstrated ability to bring energy and innovation to traditional and nontraditional instruction.
  • Ability to promote animal science recruitment operations through creative and innovative means via engagement with youth audiences.
  • Experience coaching/teaching competitive meat judging.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DEPARTMENT: The Animal Sciences Department at North Dakota State University is composed of 25 full-time faculty and 26 support personnel. The department is an academic unit of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources. The department offers undergraduate majors in animal science, veterinary technology, and equine science with a current enrollment of approximately 389 undergraduate and 26 graduate students. The faculty is nationally and internationally recognized for excellence in teaching, research, and Extension. Highly productive and dedicated faculty members have developed strong research programs in diverse areas ranging from animal production systems to molecular biology. Core research areas include nutrition, physiology, and meat science. State-of-the-art facilities include well-equipped laboratories and livestock research and teaching units, including the current construction of the Peltier Complex that will be a hub for research and innovation for ND agriculture products. The Peltier Complex is scheduled to open March 2024 and will feature a state-of-the-art, Federally inspected abattoir and meat processing facility. Our faculty members interact with numerous USDA-ARS research units and other federal and state laboratories; collaborate locally, nationally, and internationally; and engage with area Research Extension Centers and county agents. The individual hired in the present position will have a access to state-of-the-art laboratories that are under construction in the Peltier Complex. This Complex will bring together NDSU's food science, meat science, and cereal science laboratories along with Northern Crop Institute, a four-state-focused agency committed to promoting, developing and marketing crops grown in North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota and Montana. Located in the southwest corner of NDSU's campus, the facility will be uniquely positioned as a cornerstone of the university. The complex will support a wide range of research involving food science, meat science, muscle biology, food safety, nutrition, consumer sensory traits and the development of new agricultural products. Designed to meet federal and state food processing and food handling regulations, the center's labs will expand research grant opportunities and partnerships with federal and state agencies.
