JOB SUMMARY:

The Financial Data Analyst is responsible for synthesizing and identifying financial insights, trends, cost savings, and variances through compiling and analyzing large data sets across multiple platforms within the Accounting Department. Their responsibility also includes communicating those data-driven insights to management to support sound business decisions in Finance, Procurement, and other functional areas. The Financial Data Analyst is a pivotal role in helping to maintain the integrity of the organization's financial data and statistics. It is a great opportunity for those who have an intellectual curiosity to determine root causes for variances and strive for continuous process improvements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Develop, maintain and perform structured data analysis including report writing, data mining, data scrubbing and deep-dive investigation into discrepancies, trends and other outliers to optimize datasets in support of budgeting, forecasting, statistics and other financial and operational key performance indicators. Primary areas of analysis include:
a. Payroll, fringe benefits and pension
b. Purchasing & contractual services
c. Fare collection
d. Inventory
e. Budget
2. Engage with management and stakeholders with presentable and easy-to-understand graphs, tables, charts and reports using a variety of tools including BI dashboards, Excel and other reporting tools to clearly articulate the story behind the data.
3. Work with management and other cross functional teams in system migrations, development, integration, and ongoing maintenance to become a leading business system expert and data guru.
4. Make recommendations on process improvements and potential cost saving measures based upon their analysis.
5. Assist with conversions and upgrades of data systems.
6. Maintain and provide data analysis around purchase price variance (PPV) for Procurement.
7. Be a continuous learner, actively exploring and implementing new and advanced analytic and statistical techniques to extrapolate and interpret data to further drive business decisions.
8. Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Statistics, or Mathematics required.
2. 3+ years of experience in analytics, finance, and business operations.
3. Experience in public transportation or similar government structure preferred.
4. CFA Certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge and ability to apply accounting skills and concepts.
2. Skilled in on-premise and cloud business applications, such as Tableau, Ceridian and other leading ERP systems.
3. Skilled in Microsoft Office, especially Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, macros, etc.)
4. Skilled in data models, database design development, data mining, segmentation techniques, statistical methodologies, and data analysis techniques.
5. Skilled in technical programming or building queries from databases or other software systems, including Excel.
6. Skilled in building business intelligence reporting and dashboards.
7. Business and financial acumen with advanced analytical skills.
8. Ability to build detailed financial models and reports to analyze business performance.
9. Ability to understand large data sets from multiple sources to generate insights and informed business decisions.
10. Ability to work independently toward team and business objectives.
11. Ability to work conceptually without much direction with a proven track record of meeting defined goals and timelines.
12. Self-motivated and eager to learn and engage.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

1. Work is frequently conducted in an office or similar indoor environment relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.
2. Physical requirements are those described as sedentary work, which includes exerting ten (10) pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently and/or constantly having to lift, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
