The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) and the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the University of Virginia Cancer Center seeks a postdoctoral associate position. Research experiences will span several community-based research projects that target tobacco prevention and control cancer initiatives across a range of populations including youth, rural populations, and pregnant women. This position is based at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA working closely with Dr. Melissa A. Little and other faculty members of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program. The initial appointment is for one year, with two years of additional funding available, contingent on performance.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to engage in multiple projects including several National Institutes of Health (NIH) and foundation grants. Most projects are intervention-based, including individually based telephone counseling, classroom based interventions and text-messaging interventions. Candidates will be given the opportunity to contribute to grant writing, project development, study implementation, data analyses and manuscript writing (both first- and co-author). The candidate will receive mentoring in the development of independent grant proposals, and funds will be available to support independent research projects. Funds will also be available for conference travel.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a PhD in behavioral sciences, public health, psychology, sociology, or a related field by appointment start date.
  • Strong interest and experience in community-based research, including working with high-risk and diverse populations.
  • Data analysis skills preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including record of peer-review publications and scholarly presentations.

The selected applicant will be required to complete a background check and health assessment per University policy.
