Position Information

Patrol and Law Enforcement duties including citing traffic violators, issuing warnings, identifying and correcting traffic hazards, operating a police vehicle in both low and high-stress conditions, effecting legal arrests and other police patrol duties. Performing investigation duties for traffic crashes and criminal cases, including photography, scene management, collection of evidence, and writing detailed reports. Initial response and assessment for hazardous material incidents, assessment, and initiation of the Crisis Management Response Plan, and performing any other duties normally assigned to this area.

Facility Security and Alarm Responses associated with responding to security, mechanical, fire, or other alarms. Identifying, correcting, or reporting identified issues or irregularities, providing event security or security checks as required by the department, and performing other duties normally assigned to this area.

Public Safety and Security through response to requests for emergency or non-emergency services, identifying, correcting, or reporting irregularities in accordance with department procedures, performance of animal control duties, building and maintaining professional relationships throughout the community, and other duties normally assigned to this area.

Office and Administrative Duties including writing of investigation reports, ensuring compliance with law enforcement license requirements, staying current with all department and Clery related training, and performing other duties normally assigned to this area.

Work safely by following safety rules and attending required safety training. Help identify unsafe working conditions and stop others who are working in an unsafe manner.

Responsible for police patrol of university facilities and grounds, enforcing institutional rules and regulations, state laws and city ordinances. Duties include conducting and writing investigative reports, maintaining traffic regulations and issuing citations, reporting unsafe conditions, checking building security and responding to alarms, protecting life and institutional property and other duties associated with a university police officer position. Position also provides for initial response and assessment activities in evaluating incidents consistent with Crisis Management Response Plan related events.

Work Schedule:

Will work various shifts with the possibility of nights, weekends, and holidays to cover 24/7 police patrol responsibilities.

Advertised Salary:

$53,000/year

Minimum Qualifications:
  • The equivalent of two years of college in Criminal Justice or a closely related field.
  • Three years of law enforcement experience may be substituted for the college requirement
  • North Dakota Peace Officer license or ability to license in North Dakota upon hire
  • Valid driver's license with no more than three moving violations in the last two years
  • Knowledge of the general nature and existence of rules, procedures, and methods related to duties which comprise the work associated with law enforcement
  • Must have left previous law enforcement employment in good standing
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrated strong oral, written and interpersonal communications skills
  • Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other departments, vendors, contractors, external agencies, and organizations.
  • As a part of the post offer/pre-hire, selected candidate must pass a polygraph examination, pass a physical exam to include vision, corrected to 20/40, and hearing test, take a psychological assessment with results satisfactory to NDSU, submit and successfully pass a background check
  • Must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law.
  • Must not be subject to the restrictions or prohibitions as set forth by the Lautenberg amendment of the Gun Control Act of 1968
  • Must be able to satisfactorily demonstrate abilities to meet minimum qualifications
  • After hire, must pass a weapons written test and shooting course per department standards as a condition of continued employment
  • After hire, must successfully complete recruit police officer training program and successfully complete a one year probationary period as a condition of continued employment

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Law enforcement experience in a university setting or as a School Resource Officer
  • Experience in Law enforcement with a demonstrated increase in police responsibilities
