Position Information

NDSU Agriculture Communication is looking for a software developer to develop software as needed and maintain web servers for NDSU Agricultural Affairs.

Description and Details:

System administrator for several Linux server systems.
  • Install, configure, maintain and test Linux operating system web servers and related software.
  • Administer user accounts, set up new accounts, assist users making changes to their accounts, and remove inactive or expired accounts.
  • Analyze system performance, plan system capacity, develop long-term strategic plan for system, and support the system and applications.
  • Provide technical support and consultation to support technicians.
  • Recommend purchase of products and services necessary to support the development, test and production operating environments.
  • Provide back-up and recovery procedures.
  • Monitor system security.

Develop web and PC-based software applications.
  • Work with faculty and specialists to determine project needs and develop software requirements; participate in regular project meetings with faculty and specialists.
  • Analyze the needs and design software using proven software development methods.
  • Write software applications according to design specifications.
  • Test software to assure correctness. Software is expected to be completely functional and problem-free.
  • Fix software problems discovered after the initial release of the application.
  • Define/implement programming methods that will enhance application performance or programming productivity.
  • Perform the tasks listed above within estimated and reasonable timeframes.

Work Schedule:

40 hours/week, Monday through Friday; some flexibility available on exact schedule.

Advertised Salary: $75,000

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems or equivalent job experience.
  • Experience with UNIX or Linux system administration.
  • Experience with relational databases.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, Ruby or PHP.
  • Experience with software development for the UNIX or Linux platform.
  • Experience developing web applications.
  • Ability to work independently with limited oversight.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Creativity and innovation.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with the Python, Ruby and PHP programming languages.
  • Experience with the PostgreSQL database server.
  • Experience with the MySQL or MariaDB database server.
  • Experience installing and configuring the Linux OS on servers.
  • Experience with Intel processor-based server computer hardware.
  • Experience supporting and maintaining the Drupal Content Management System.
  • Experience supporting and maintaining the Plone Content Management System.
  • Experience with Apache web server administration.
  • Experience using a version control system like Git.
  • Background in customer service.
  • Ability to work as a part of a team, a team player.
  • Initiative, leadership and strategic thinking.
