The Office of the Vice-President for Agricultural Affairs, the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources (CAFSNR) at North Dakota State University (NDSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director, School of Natural Resource Sciences (SNRS). The Director has appointments in the CAFSNR, the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (NDAES), and NDSU Extension (NDSU EXT) and reports to the Vice-President for Agricultural Affairs for those functions. The Director is responsible for administrative, budgetary, and personnel actions within the School and across its component disciplines. The Director, in collaboration with School personnel, will:
  • Foster excellence in research, teaching, and extension within the School through innovation of techniques, advanced communication systems and routine internal training.
  • Lead the development and articulation for greater synergies throughout the School's disciplines in research, academics, and extension via continuous cross discipline collaboration of personnel, assets and innovation.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with the university community as well as stakeholder groups, such as government agencies, commodity organizations, industry and scientific communities, alumni, and the public through well-defined publicly stated goals and departmental visibility.
  • Manage the School's human, financial, and physical resources, including evaluating personnel performance, conflict resolution, administering pay increases, and providing oversight of budgets.
  • Coordinate the promotion, tenure, and evaluation process for tenured and tenure track faculty with joint appointments in CAFSNR, NDAES and NDSU EXT, and coordinate the promotion process for non-tenure faculty.
  • Coordinate legislative initiatives within the School and with peer unit leaders and Directors of NDAES and NDSU EXT.
  • Recruit and retain outstanding students, staff, and faculty.
  • Promote an environment that fosters diversity, ethical behavior, collegiality, and teamwork .
  • Prepare and submit administrative reports.
  • Conduct teaching, research, or outreach activities commensurate with administrative responsibilities.
  • Communicate with university administrators and School faculty, staff, and/or students, and facilitate transfer of relevant information among groups.
  • Coordinate the mentoring of students, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Entomology, Natural Resources, Range Science, Soil Science, or related fields from an accredited institution.
  • Academic credentials: rank of associate professor with tenure.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities.
  • Exhibit outstanding two-way communication skills and ability to represent the School within the university, and to external stakeholders, government, and scientific groups.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, team-building skills and interpersonal abilities.
  • Significant accomplishments and recognized excellence in the field of agriculture, natural resources, or closely related disciplines with a commitment to professional excellence.
  • A commitment to shared governance with faculty, staff, students, and administrators.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in fiscal, property, and personnel management in an academic environment.
  • Academic credentials: rank of professor with tenure.
  • Experience at a land grant institution.
  • Proven record in successfully mentoring students, faculty, and staff.
  • Experience with research in and/or management of inter-disciplinary programs.
  • Exemplary record of professional achievement.

About the School of Natural Resource Sciences

SNRS is a multi-disciplinary unit exploring entomology, natural resources management, rangeland science, and soil science. Natural resources, including animals, plants, soil, water, and their ecosystem services, are fundamental for the structure and function of agricultural systems. Natural resource management integrates the goals of environmental sustainability with the productivity of our working landscapes. The unit is proud that its work is:

• Multidisciplinary: Studying and managing how soil, water, plants, and animals interact under the umbrellas of entomology, natural resources management, range science, and soil science.

• Collaborative: Sharing and gaining ideas from other disciplines and departments to further our mutual goals.

• Real-world problem solving: Crafting solutions for natural and working landscapes, especially rangelands and agriculture systems.

• Beneficial to North Dakota: Promoting a sustainable environment, abundant ecosystem services, and productive agricultural systems.

SNRS has 23 full-time faculty members with diverse expertise. The unit also employs 19 research sta? and has strong administrative support. The undergraduate programs serve approximately 100 students in assorted majors. The School's masters, PhD, and professional graduate programs serve approximately 70 graduate students. Facilities available to the SNRS include a state-of-the-art greenhouse complex, laboratory space, and access to ?eld research locations throughout North Dakota, including possible collaboration with seven Research Extension Centers.
