Description

This position is located at the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC), an international leader in energy and environmental research, conducting projects for clients throughout the United States and the world. The successful applicant will work closely with directors and program/project managers, especially in the research areas of oil and gas production optimization and geologic CO2 capture and storage, assisting in managing research tasks within a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals. The successful applicant will assist in bringing project deliverables and milestones to completion, including working closely with task managers and being well qualified to review and offer constructive comments on technical reports and publications. The applicant will have the ability to stay apprised of the opportunities and challenges facing the energy industry and engage with stakeholders, partners, and clients to inform on strategies and implement solutions that enable the prudent production and use of fossil energy. This position will be a primary client interface and may lead commercial, state, or federal projects or programs related to carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and/or oil and gas. This position will report to an assistant director.

The EERC is looking for an experienced, motivated, and market-oriented individual to contribute to the success of the organization by performing the following functions:
  • Assist EERC directors and project managers at a high level in the development of research plans and the execution of project tasks.
  • Work with task leads and project managers to ensure specific programmatic and project-related deliverables, milestones, reports, marketing publications and presentations, and other related work is successfully completed on time, on budget, and within client expectations; and will have some responsibility as primary project manager.
  • Work with stakeholders, partners, and clients to inform strategies and implement solutions that enable prudent and economic production and use of fossil energy with reduced carbon intensity and acceptable environmental stewardship.
  • Develop and communicate factual and scientifically derived information on research results and the status of scientific initiatives related to CCUS and/or oil and gas production optimization, with an emphasis on geological aspects of CCUS and/or oil and gas production, regionally and across the United States, to industry, academic, and government stakeholders.
  • Stay current with the opportunities and challenges facing the energy industry by engaging stakeholders; participate in legal, regulatory, and permitting processes; and interpret guidance, policy, and regulatory documents.
  • Work in collaboration with EERC subject matter experts, leadership, and clients to prepare proposals and budgets and to develop, pursue, and execute business opportunities that are responsive to client interests.
  • Effectively and professionally communicate progress and status to stakeholders by partaking in or leading in-person meetings, web meetings, conference calls, and presentations, and participate in knowledge-sharing with stakeholders by attending or presenting at conferences.
  • Prepare briefings, technical reports, conference papers, peer-reviewed journal articles, and outreach materials to communicate technical results to clients, stakeholders, the public, and the scientific community.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in geology.
  • 8 years of experience in geoscience, including industry experience related to resource evaluation, incremental oil recovery, unconventional oil and gas development and recovery, or CO2 geologic storage.
  • 5+ years of experience working in Williston Basin geology.
  • Experience in editing technical content and/or reviewing permit applications for regulatory compliance.
  • Experience that shows leadership in working with subject matter experts, including technical and other expert disciplines (i.e., financial, health and safety, contractual, legal, etc.).
  • Experience meeting project deadlines for reports, milestones, and other deliverables.
  • Applicants may be required to present during the interview and submit a project report they spearheaded and/or assembled.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in geology or petroleum engineering.
  • 9+ years of experience conducting or supporting research for federal, state, and/or commercial clients.
  • Experience in project management or applied research management related to incremental oil recovery, unconventional oil recovery, and CO2 capture and geologic storage.
  • 2+ years of geology experience working in the Bakken Petroleum System.
  • Experience in addressing the challenges, opportunities, and incentives facing regional carbon capture, transport, use, and geologic storage.
  • Experience with the entire life cycle of carbon capture and storage project development and implementation (i.e., site screening through permitting and implementation).
  • Experience managing U.S. Department of Energy programs and leading the development of topical, technical, and final reports. Experience serving as a technical editor and setting vision for meeting project objectives.
  • Experience developing and winning proposals in response to federal or state funding opportunity announcements.
  • Extensive experience in communicating the status and results of research projects at various levels.
  • Demonstrated experience with the North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC) Department of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas Division's regulations and participation in regulatory hearings.


Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$120,000 / year; Exempt; Benefited; Full-time

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with flexibility to accommodate work activities/work life balance. Travel may be required.
