Major Responsibilities:

Directs the coding function including production, report analysis, risk mitigation, internal and external partnerships, and support for hospital coding.

Provides accurate and thorough monthly data analytic reports to support progress made in each area of responsibility including key performance indicators. Identifies and implements action plans for any area that is outside of expected performance for the Review and Production teams.

Oversees hospital coding data analytics and the 3m encoding program. Tracks and trends results from computer assisted coding reports. Uses data to provide accurate and thorough KPI indicators. Identifies and implements action plans for any area that is outside of expected performance.

Interprets policies and procedures, recommends changes as appropriate, and provides relevant feedback. Disseminates changes to procedures to coders with explanation of differences. Assists the executive director with the oversight and implementation of Coding Operations operational planning, budgets, staffing, workflow processes and internal controls.

Collaborates with HIT to test, refine, and implement updates for Epic and 3m, communicates status to Executive Director.

Determines staffing and productivity standards for department.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as integral component in coding operations and is responsible for setting the tone and expectations for behavior and customer service for team.
  • Assists with creating, maintaining, and monitoring department budgets. Develops and recommends operating and capital budgets and controls expenditures within approved budget objectives.
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which include interviewing and selection of new employees, promotions, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation changes, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.
  • Develops and recommends operating and capital budgets and controls expenditures within approved budget objectives.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations, and laws applicable to the organization's business.
  • Monitors coding productivity expectations regularly to ensure timely coding turnaround is within goal days.
  • Monitors daily volumes to ensure staffing is appropriate for all areas.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Health Information Administrator (RHIA) registration issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) preferred
  • CCS required


Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or comparable on the job training (15 or more years of experience)


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 15 years of experience in acute care health information coding within a high volume, multifaceted care setting. Includes 3 years of management experience in management of staff, and in overseeing of budgets and health information coding functions.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Experience managing internal and external relationships.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills.
  • Experience with remote work force operations required.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a proven record of data driven results.
  • Self-motivated with initiative.
  • Strong sense of ethics.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Exposed to a normal office environment.
  • Must be able to constantly sit and occasionally walk.
  • Occasionally will lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Functional vision, hearing, speech and hand/eye coordination.
  • Position requires travel, therefore may be exposed to road and weather hazards.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
