Job description

Title: Career Coach (Skilled Trades and Workforce Development)

Pay Range: $20-$22 hourly, Full Time, 40 Hours weekly

Reports to: Assistant Vice President of Workforce Development

Position Description:

The Skilled Trades Career Coach will work with adolescents (14-18 years of age) in a school-based and out-of-school time environment. This position is responsible for building relationships with _Careerforce Build UP!_ members in high school, supporting the students through high school, and focus on a successful transition into apprenticeship, college, or working directly in the field of construction.

The position will support high-quality opportunities for construction career exploration and development experiences for Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County members of _Careerforce Build UP!_ Programs. This role will work closely with other staff, will plan, implement, supervise, and evaluate activities and programs provided for youth focusing on the needs and interests of adolescents.

This position will maintain a student-centered approach to supporting the career goals of BGCDC members and encourage further development of skills and experiences based on the students' interests. Success in this position will rely on building strong, collaborative relationships with Boys & Girls Club staff across multiple sites, teachers and counselors within the school district, youth apprenticeship, apprenticeship training centers, community-based organizations, and local employers.

This position will continue to support members after high school to ensure that students are connected to resources needed that will increase their success during their pathway to a career in construction.

This position will typically work mid-day and early evening hours. This position may include evenings/weekend hours for special events and additional daytime hours for early-release and non-school days. Travel between locations is required.

Responsibilities Include:
Provide coaching, mentoring, and support through continued contact and meetings with _Careerforce Build UP!_ members to encourage continued enrollment, address personal and academic barriers, and prepare for workforce readiness.
Conduct programming initiatives around key dates to support enrollment, retention, and graduation, including apprenticeship testing, and pre-apprenticeship or pre-employment training, apprenticeship enrollment, scholarships, class registration, textbook purchases, and paying tuition.
Work in partnership with the employers and apprenticeship centers to identify, support, and build relationships with graduating high school seniors that plan to/are enrolled in the institutions you support
Collaborate with appropriate school departments and student services to establish partnerships that will enhance the academic, social, emotional and personal development and success of students
Track and collect member data, including but not limited to enrollment rate, major, financial gaps, challenges faced, and engagement, and utilize monthly data reports to refine programming
Use innovative methods and media to connect with disengaged and unenrolled members to share additional methods of support available
Collaborate with _Careerforce Build UP! _team to plan and implement signature program events including Application Days, Career Fairs, Apprenticeship Signing Days, Alumni Association Meetings, and more
Support curriculum design & implementation of after-school and summer programming for Build Trade Career Exploration, Construction Workplace Soft Skills, Pre-Apprenticeship Training, & Pre-Employment Training, Internships, Youth Apprenticeships

Additional Responsibilities
Participate in special programs and events as assigned by supervisor
May drive Club vehicles as assigned
Other duties as assigned to support the mission and vision of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County

Qualifications:
At least 21 years of age
High School Diploma/GED/HSED required
Associates degree preferred
A minimum of 2 years experience working in a non-profit organization, high school, school district, or career and workforce development program
2 years direct service experience with youth and young adults at the high school or college-age.
At least one-year previous construction, skilled trades or career program experience required
Experience collaborating with and/or across multiple teams, or working in a community partnership model strongly preferred
Bilingual Candidates (Spanish Language) are highly encouraged to apply
Eligibility as a Caregiver by the Department of Children and Families
Successful completion of drug screening, physical examination, and tuberculosis testing.
Must be approved as a volunteer through Madison Metropolitan School District and meet required guidelines and background check.
Qualified within 3 months of accepting role (Training Provided by the organization)
CPR certified within 3 months of assuming the position (Training Provided by the organization)
The ability and desire to work with youth and adolescents in a variety of settings
Flexibility, adaptability, and desire to work in a team environment.
Strong verbal, written, and communication skills
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines concurrently
Ability to build positive working relationships with BGCDC staff, board members, volunteers, members, partners, and stakeholders
Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, G-Suite, and Zoom
Demonstrated ability to build rapport with students

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff, Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/ instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel.

External: Maintain contact with other vendors, consultants, organizations, and others to achieve program goals and objectives, manage costs, share information, and resolve problems.

Required Hours:

The regular hours for this hourly role are scheduled for 8 hours within the hours of operations for the programming, typically when school occurs Monday - Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening hours will be required as project deadlines dictate. Must be able to travel to off-site Clubs, meetings, and events.

Work Location:

This is primarily a direct service position and requires work on-site daily supporting collaborative efforts across several high school sites, multiple Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County sites, and the McKenzie Regional Workforce Center. Due to COVID-19, employees are currently working remotely in a part-time capacity and with approval from the supervisor as work deadlines allow. Employees must maintain phone and internet services to be able to complete work as required. Technology equipment will be assigned to ensure employees have access to BGCDC servers and files. Employees may be required to work from their assigned office/site as needed. All COVID-19 mandated policies must be followed as posted.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical requirements: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and policy manuals. The ability to clearly and concisely exchange/receive ideas, facts and/or technical information with others. Ability to visually monitor activities of club members. The employee is required to be able to perform CPR or first aid. The employee is required to use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, or balance, and stoop, jump, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is required to operate a motor vehicle. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds. Working environment: Normal club environment.
