Description

The mission of the ARS National Program in Human Nutrition is to conduct basic and applied research to identify and understand how nutrients and other bio-active food components affect human health. The ultimate goal of this food-based agricultural research is to identify foods and diets, coupled with genetics and physical activity that sustain and promote health throughout the life cycle.

The current foundation of our research is:
  • Obesity Prevention
  • Health Roles of Food
  • Bone Health

The Center has numerous partnerships with regional, national, and international universities, local, state, and federal agencies as well as commodity groups. The Center also has partnerships with Native American communities and tribal colleges to address obesity, diabetes, and heart disease in high need, under-served communities.

The University of North Dakota employees at the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center (GFHNRC) provide professional and technical expertise and location support services. The contracted UND employees are divided into four units: Metabolic, Dietary, Computing, and Vivarium.

The Animal Lab Technician is part of the Vivarium unit at the GFHNRC. The purpose of this position is to provide laboratory animal care to help fulfill the research needs of the Human Nutrition Research Center. Animals must be properly cared for 365 days per year; therefore, this position sometimes requires the individual to work during weekends, holidays, emergencies, and closures.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide food and water to laboratory animals and obtain accurate weight measurements
  • Monitor health of laboratory animals
    • Daily examinations
    • Notate any concerns and bring awareness to leadership
  • Sanitation and facility maintenance
    • Rotate and clean animal cages and feed/water containers
    • Follow Vivarium schedules for equipment sanitation and facility maintenance
  • Technical assistance to HNRC researchers as needed
  • Inventory Maintenance
  • General duties and responsibilities
    • Understand and follow UND policies and procedures
    • Understand and follow Federal policies and procedures as they pertain to UND employees at the HNRC
    • Appropriate communication to UND leadership and Federal Work Directors


Required Competencies

  • Ability to prioritize, organize and multi-task while working under time constraints
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Respectfulness, cooperation, and ability to follow directions are imperative
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong observational skills
  • Understanding of the need for the use of animals in biomedical research, and empathy and compassion towards research animals
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Must be able and willing to follow complex written protocols
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays as required


Minimum Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent related work experience, or combination of education and work experience
  • Successful completion of Criminal History Background Check
  • United States citizenship required per grant requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in laboratory setting
  • Experience in a university laboratory setting
  • Experience handling mice and/or rats


Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$17.00 / hour; non-exempt; benefited; full-time

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm
