Description

The vision of the University of North Dakota Institute of Energy Studies (IES) is to pursue new frontiers in energy research and education that enables the development of the next generation of integrated energy system technologies that are economically competitive, reliable, sustainable, and politically and environmentally acceptable.

To realize this vision, the Institute for Energy Studies has established the following mission:
  • Facilitate the coordination of CEM's multidisciplinary energy education, research, development, and commercialization activities in partnership with UND campus units, other NDUS campuses, and federal, state, and industrial partners.
  • Provide a well-trained workforce cognizant of the issues facing the energy industry today and in the future generations by engaging students in education that is focused on the technical, social, political, environmental, and economic needs of the worldwide community.
  • Develop a multi-disciplinary scientifically balanced research portfolio aimed at accelerating the implementation of efficient and environmentally sustainable energy production technologies.

As a research department within the College of Engineering and Mines (CEM), IES strives to develop technologies of the future that can impact and transform the energy field, as well as, educate the next generation of Engineers and Scientists with the necessary tools to contribute towards the global energy transition through mentorship by senior staff and faculty within the Institute and the College of Engineering and Mines at large. This is reflected through our growing success with research in the areas of advanced energy systems including chemical looping and gasification for hydrogen production, critical minerals, battery development, and carbon dioxide removal. The Research Engineer II position exists so that the Institute of Energy Studies can hire and retain an engineer or scientist with the ability to perform higher-level research activities such as, formulate a research plan, set up a research program to meet the needs of a client/project, write major grant proposals and manage the projects that result from these proposals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory, pilot, and field studies for sponsored research
  • Perform experimental and modeling activities associated with sponsored research
  • Preparation of reports and presentations for work conducted or to be conducted.
  • Perform techno-economic feasibility studies, including the definition of the process, development of the process flow diagrams, material and energy balances, equipment selection, sizing, and costing, and estimation of overall capital and operating costs.
  • Work with students, staff, and faculty to complete projects.
  • Develop research data and technical write-ups for proposal opportunities
  • Be the lead or principal investigator on funded projects


Required Competencies

  • Record of success as a researcher with demonstrated ability to:
    • Formulate a research plan
    • Set up a research program to meet the specific needs of a client
    • Independently write research reports and journal publications
  • Strong writing/communication skills


Minimum Requirements

  • Master's Degree or higher in Chemical Engineering or related field, or, Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering with over 5 years of related work experience
  • Experience/thesis work to be relevant to IES portfolio, which includes, but is not limited to:
    • Carbon dioxide capture and utilization
    • Chemical Synthesis - Hydrogen, Ammonia, Fischer-Tropsch fuels
    • Advanced energy generation systems - Chemical looping, gasification
    • Materials development and characterization
    • Traditional energy generation
    • Critical minerals / rare earth elements
    • Energy storage/battery technologies
  • Hand's on experience and skill in operating laboratory- or pilot-scale experimental research equipment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software - Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Excel
  • Successful completion of Criminal History Records Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering
  • Knowledge of Process simulation and modeling software such as ASPEN, Fluent HYSYS, MATLAB, or similar
  • Experience writing proposals to funding agencies


Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$75,000+ annually; exempt; benefited; full-time

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday 8 am-4:30 pm
