Description & Details: The Department of Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering (ABEN) at North Dakota State University, invites applications for a Research Specialist position to conduct research in the field of precision agriculture. The appointment is for 12-month period, and renewal of the appointment will depend on satisfactory performance. The successful applicant will work on research focused on applications of a variety of advanced sensors (RGB, thermal, multispectral, Lidar, and hyperspectral), image and imagery analysis, GIS software, and data processing and management to implement (semi)automated solutions in support of research involving, but not limited to, crop nutrition, soils, site-specific weed management, and high throughput phenotyping for some of the main crops grown in North Dakota (mainly, but not limited to, soybeans, corn, wheat, dry beans, and peas). Key responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to: assisting project investigators and collaborators in designing, preparing and conducting research experiments related to precision agriculture; collection and processing of field and greenhouse data; assisting with installation and retrieval of sensors in the field, as well as data collection from those sensors; assisting with the fabrication (wood, metal, 3D printing) to support sensor data collection; carrying UAS flights to collect data; assisting with dissemination of research findings through written reports, oral presentations, and journal publications.

Work Schedule: Full time 12 month

Advertised Salary: $45,000-$53,000 /Year - C ommensurate with qualifications and experience

Minimum Qualifications:
  • M.S. in Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, Plant Sciences, Soils, or related field.
  • Research experience in precision agriculture areas such as sensors, UAS remote sensing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and/or robotics.
  • Have a valid driver's license with the ability to travel to remote field sites.
  • Ability to work independently and as a multidisciplinary team member.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including satisfactory oral and written communication skills.
  • A valid US driver's license or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of agronomy, plant science or closely related discipline.
  • Familiarity with agriculture and crops grown in North Dakota
  • Demonstrated experience working with unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and the imagery collected by those systems.
  • A valid small UAS Remote Pilot License (Part 107).
  • Knowledge of statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS).
  • Knowledge of image analysis software (e.g., C, C++, Python, and/or MATLAB).
