Position Information

Description & Details: North Dakota State University invites applications for a 9-month position in judicial politics, to begin on August 16, 2023. The position lasts for two years, or from August 2023 to May 2025.

The department of Political Science & Public Policy at NDSU is recruiting for a 9-month doctoral or post-doctoral fellowship, preferred starting Fall 2023. The position will also be affiliated with the Sheila and Robert Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth. We seek candidates with expertise in judicial politics and constitutional law, broadly construed. Successful applicants should be versed in American public law, but could conduct research in a broad variety of related areas, such as, but not limited to, the role of race, ethnicity, sexualities, and/or gender in justice systems, comparative judicial politics, international courts and legal structures, the First Amendment, federalism and the legal system, or American political development. The teaching load is 2-2 for two years with one course release. Successful applicants will be prepared to teach core undergraduate and graduate law-related courses on American judicial politics, such as judicial processes and constitutional law. As an affiliate of the Challey Institute, the successful applicant will be expected to conduct research that contributes to the Challey Institute's mission and participate in Challey Institute events. The successful applicant will have opportunities to apply for developmental funds through the department and the Challey Institute.

Minimum Qualifications: The minimum qualifications for the position are: 1) ABD or hold a Ph.D. in Political Science, or a related discipline, 2) evidence of research productivity, or potential to publish scholarship in peer reviewed journals, presses, and other outlets appropriate to one's field, 3) competence to teach American judicial processes and constitutional law, and 4) effective written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: We will give priority to candidates who 1) hold a Ph.D. in Political Science, or a related discipline, 2) can provide substantial evidence of (potential) research productivity and quality, 3) have experience teaching American judicial processes and/or constitutional law, 4) can provide substantial evidence of teaching effectiveness, and/or 5) have experience supervising or mentoring undergraduate students.

Applicant Materials Required: Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, writing sample, statement of teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., syllabi, course materials, evidence of participation in teaching professionalization activities, and, if available, evaluations by peers and/or mentors; please do not include student evaluations of teaching), and 3 letters of reference. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

The Department of Political Science & Public Policy has 7 tenure-track faculty members and serves roughly 100 undergraduate majors in political science and a new Masters of Public Policy program. Faculty in the department typically teach four classes per year. The NDSU community and national organizations have regularly recognized department faculty for excellence in research, teaching, and mentorship. The college provides computing resources and department members have access to a yearly research and professionalization budget.

The Community

NDSU is located in Fargo-Moorhead (F-M), a pleasant, safe, diversifying, and growing community of approximately 240,000 people. As the largest population center in the region, F-M is a hub of entertainment, finance, information technology, and medical services for a large geographic area including the state of North Dakota, and western Minnesota. Two universities (NDSU and Minnesota State University Moorhead) and one private liberal arts college (Concordia College) are located in F-M. Fargo is an hour drive from a major resort area in the Minnesota "lakes country" and two hours from scenic Itasca State Park, where you will find the headwaters of the Mississippi river. Central and western North Dakota offer beautiful hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and related opportunities in the Badlands, national grasslands, and numerous river valleys. Winnipeg, Manitoba is less than a four-hour drive to the north and Minneapolis-St. Paul is an equal distance to the southeast.
