Position Description & Details:

Subject to final approval, the Department of Plant Sciences is offering you a 75% appointment as a Graduate Research Fellow for the period 1/1/2023 to 12/31/2023 (appointment period cannot exceed one fiscal year at a time) under the supervision of Dr. Clair Keene. This appointment may be renewed annually (maximum appointment period for master's degree students is two years and for doctoral students five years). Continuation of this type of appointment is dependent on progress toward graduation, including your continued enrollment in the graduate degree program with at least 3 credits per semester and no more than 18 course credits per academic year and not more than 6 credits in two summer sessions when employed. Thesis and research credits are not included in the course credit limitations but may be used to meet the minimum requirement.

The stipend for this appointment will be $27,000 and the research responsibilities will include processing samples, analyzing data, coordinating with 2023 trial host sites, preparing all seed and inputs needed for 2023 trials, executing 2023 field trial protocols and harvesting and processing of samples. It is expected that you will analyze data and contribute to reports and presentations for your project. Additional duties include assisting the small grain and broadleaf agronomy programs with planting, trial management, data collection, harvest, sample processing and data entry as needed. Communicating with trial host sites and coordinating field activities and data collection associated with your project will be your responsibility. You will also be responsible for keeping vehicles and laboratory spaces used clean and completing all mandatory safety training.

In addition to the above stipend, this appointment includes a tuition waiver and the following fringe benefits: Social Security, TIAA-CREF retirement, health, total disability and life insurances and, for those with 12-month appointments, prorated sick and annual leave.

Graduate assistants are not allowed to work more than 20 hours/week, but exceptions may be granted for up to six (6) additional hours (a total of no more than 26 total hours for the assistantship plus additional work). With this letter I am requesting the exception from the Graduate Dean for you to work the additional 6 hours/week as a Graduate Research Fellow.
