Description

The vision of the University of North Dakota Institute of Energy Studies (IES) is to pursue new frontiers in energy research and education that enables the development of the next generation of integrated energy system technologies that are economically competitive, reliable, sustainable, and politically and environmentally acceptable.

To realize this vision, the Institute for Energy Studies has established the following mission:
  • Facilitate the coordination of CEM's multidisciplinary energy education, research, development, and commercialization activities in partnership with UND campus units, other NDUS campuses, and federal, state, and industrial partners.
  • Provide a well-trained workforce cognizant of the issues facing the energy industry today and in the future generations by engaging students in education that is focused on the technical, social, political, environmental, and economic needs of the worldwide community.
  • Develop a multi-disciplinary scientifically balanced research portfolio aimed at accelerating the implementation of efficient and environmentally sustainable energy production technologies.

As a research department within the College of Engineering and Mines (CEM), IES strives to develop technologies of the future that can impact and transform the energy field, as well as, educate the next generation of Engineers with the necessary tools to contribute towards the global energy transition through mentorship by senior staff and faculty within the Institute and the College of Engineering and Mines at large. This is reflected through our growing success with research in the areas of advanced energy systems including chemical looping and gasification for hydrogen production, critical minerals, battery development, and carbon dioxide removal. The Research Engineer I position exists so that the IES can hire and train an entry-level engineer or scientist with the ability to perform basic research activities including applying engineering/science knowledge in developing test protocols/procedures for research projects, operate laboratory equipment, reduce and interpret data and develop standard operating procedures for laboratory equipment.

Three positions are available.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Apply engineering/science skills and knowledge to complete assigned tasks
  • Design and develop experimental procedures to accomplish the objectives of assigned projects
  • Operate laboratory, pilot, and field equipment
  • Analyze research data to develop graphs, reports, and technical presentations
  • Participate in design meetings for developing experimental procedures, equipment, and data collection
  • Coordinate with supervisors and project sponsors to disseminate data and results
  • Other research duties


Required Competencies

  • Interest in hands-on research work including fabrication and equipment operation
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and comfortable working within a team
  • Good writing/communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite specifically Excel and Word


Minimum Requirements

  • B.S. in an engineering discipline, chemistry, or closely related field
  • Experience with laboratory/bench-scale equipment operation
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software - Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Excel
  • Successful completion of Criminal History Records Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with conducting laboratory experiments and reporting results
  • Experience with collecting and reducing data for reports or presentation
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and/or fabrication tools including lathe, drill press, welder
  • Experience relevant to IES research portfolio:
  • Materials development and characterization
  • Traditional energy generation
  • Renewables
  • Advanced energy generations
  • Carbon capture and utilization
  • Hydrogen
  • Rare earth elements and critical minerals
  • Battery technologies/energy storage


Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$65,000+ / year; exempt; benefited; full-time

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm
