Description & Details:

Reporting to the Director of the University Police and Safety Office, this position is responsible for performing duties related to the planning, administration, and supervision of environmental health related programs for the university. Duties include managing state and federal regulatory programs associated with the unit's responsibility in these areas, teaching and training requirements, and inspection and enforcement responsibilities. Personnel directly reporting to the position are the Hazardous Materials Technician, Hazardous Materials Inspection Technician, and the Environmental Health Technician. As a team, this group responds to chemical, biological, and radiological related incidents on campus utilizing the Incident Command System and the National Incident Management System practices.

This position has specific management responsibilities for environmental health and safety programs including chemical, biological, and radiation safety; hazardous waste disposal for a large quantity generator system; indoor air quality; asbestos programs; as well as storm water program oversight.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related physical science
  • Knowledge and experience with chemical safety, radiological safety, environmental health programs, and hazardous material handling
  • Laboratory experience
  • Ability to demonstrate to the satisfaction of NDSU, a working knowledge of all the duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Ability to demonstrate strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to demonstrate organization skills and manage crisis situations while providing guidance
  • Must possess a valid driver's license

As part of the post offer/pre-hire, the applicant must be able to successfully pass to the satisfaction of NDSU a comprehensive background check to include a fingerprint check.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in Chemistry or related physical science
  • Experience in a variety of laboratory settings
  • Experience working in a higher education setting
  • Demonstrated management experience
  • Prior recognition as a radiation safety officer
