The VP Formulary Development and Trend Management will serve as a key leader within the Government Programs Pharmacy team in the development of formulary strategies to support UnitedHealthcare's Medicare, Medicaid, and Individual Exchange businesses. This leadership role will partner with the plan's Actuarial, Finance, Clinical Operations, Industry Relations, and Product teams to design formularies that align with all CMS requirements and corresponding product strategies to support Medicare Part D, Medicaid, and Individual Exchange goals. The ideal candidate for this position will bring a balance of clinical acumen, strategic insight, and a strong analytic mindset. Additionally, candidates require strong relationship building skills with an ability to represent the plan in the engagement with key stakeholders related to formulary decisions, the evaluation and selection of strategies to impact emerging trends, and any necessary communication related to pharmaceutical pipeline monitoring. This position will represent the Government Programs Pharmacy Organization, working across the enterprise to strengthen partnerships and drive value for the organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategy and development of formularies across UHC Government Programs that provide clinically sound and affordable care for members, meet all government required regulations, and manage spend through the modeling, evaluation, and selection of preferred agents that support product strategy goals
  • Monitor and evaluate complex pharmacy data, identify causes of pharmacy trends, and recommend strategic action to drive impact across different plan populations
  • Foster strong partnerships with key business cross-functional teams across the Government Programs organization including but not limited to Actuarial, Finance, Product, and Industry Relations to support the Medicare Part D bid as well as Medicaid and Individual Exchange strategy
  • Own the development of clinical and financial content related to formulary decisions via governance committees that involve a leadership audience requiring a clear, concise presentation manner that highlights key items, encourages discussion, and drives sound decisions
  • Drive a solid organizational culture supporting employee development, growth, and retention
  • Collaborate with Industry Relations colleagues within PBM to identify and evaluate pharmaceutical contracting opportunities that drive organizational value and support product strategy and formulary objectives across Government Programs lines of business

Required Qualifications:

  • Registered pharmacist with a license in good standing within a US State or Territory OR equivalent experience (i.e., 10 years of Healthcare Economics, Data Analytics)
  • 10+ years of experience applying advanced analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to sift through data and identify solutions to solve problems
  • 5+ years of Managed Care pharmacy experience specific to formulary and/or pharmacy benefit affordability strategy (government experience highly preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience managing and leading a team
  • Experience within a matrixed team environment to deliver objectives within an established timeline
  • Solid history of developing partnerships and building relationships both with direct reports and cross functional leaders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in negotiating with pharma (government experience highly preferred)
  • Experience in Managed Medicaid and Individual Exchange formulary management

Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, or New York City Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada/New York City residents is $134,200 to $257,700. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
