Position Information

Position Summary:

The Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University is seeking a research specialist to assist in conducting basic and applied scientific research applicable to wheat, flour, dough and end-product qualities with special focus on analytical chemistry (protein, carbohydrates, lipids, metabolites etc.). Individual will assist in preparing research results and drafting manuscripts for appropriate journals; operating, maintaining and troubleshooting the analytical equipment of the wheat quality laboratory including but not limited to HPLC, GC, LC-MS, 2-DGE system, and dietary fiber analyzer; optimizing analytical procedures and developing new methods of analysis for that equipment. Will provide technical support to graduate students, staff, faculty, and outside inquiries in the areas of wheat, flour, dough and end-product quality analysis, and evaluation procedures. Will help in preparing and facilitating laboratory demonstrations for wheat quality related teaching courses; conducting special contract research projects for the development of new markets of HRS wheat, inter-institution collaborative studies, and/or special need of the Department or University in the areas of cereal science and technology. Will conduct analyses and prepare data summaries and/or report results of wheat quality evaluations, including, but not limited to, NDSU wheat breeder, ND Wheat Commission, and collaborative studies.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • M. Sc. or equivalent in Food Science, Cereal Science, Biochemistry, Plant Science or related fields.
  • Experience in conducting research in wheat protein/carbohydrate/lipid chemistry.
  • Experience in biochemical analyses related wheat, flour, dough and end-product quality.
  • Experience in using HPLC, GC, LC-MS, 2-DGE, Dietary fiber analyzing laboratory equipment/system including operation, management and troubleshooting.
  • Experience of laboratory procedures of wheat protein, carbohydrate, metabolites extraction and processing.
  • Knowledge of statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS) and Microsoft Office packages.
  • Experience in experimental result preparation and interpretation for scientific publication, and writing scientific journal articles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and able to work with others in a multicultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Supervisory experience

Advertised salary: $52,000 +/year
