Job Summary:

The Manager- US Indirect Tax Audits will be responsible for managing the US Sales & Use tax audits and/or administrative appeals for Trane Technologies & its Affiliate entities. This position requires the individual to interact with State government auditors in a clear, concise, and professional manner. This role is expected to perform in depth data analysis and interpret court cases and state statutes relating to the enforcement and administration of the sales tax law to mitigate assessments and implement process improvements as needed. The individual will work with a high level of independence but will need to coordinate with others across multiple functions from a state and local tax planning, process improvement, and compliance perspective to ensure alignment of tax issues and strategic knowledge across various impacted teams/business units.

The successful candidate is required to have had previous experience with US Sales & Use tax audits and taxability determinations. Audit results directly impact Trane Technologies?? exposure and cash flow. This role will interact directly with State government auditors as well as the sales organization and various internal departments. This position will be part of the Corporate Tax organization. The individual will be expected to be a change agent, a self-starter, and a critical thinker driven for results and able to work effectively with business unit leadership. The position is in the US headquarters located in Davidson, NC.

This position will report directly to the Senior Tax Manager - US Indirect Tax.

Responsibilities:

Manage indirect tax audits across multiple tax types and jurisdictions for various legal entities with the goal to minimize any taxes assessed

Research and Identify audit trends, issues, best practices, and knowledge shares across all business teams

Develop and communicate preliminary strategies to favorably resolve audit issues

Draft documents that explain complex subjects and their application to our company in clear and unambiguous language

Provide guidance to business partners based on research of state and local tax laws, regulations, and case law

Work with the exemption certificate team to communicate changes in statutory requirements.

Manage and develop relationships with government auditors to provide data and respond to information requests timely.

Work and promote ethical standards of the company

Participates in account reconciliations and data validation

Reviews and summarizes audit findings to effectively communicate recommended changes to company compliance practices

Interact with tax management and/or operating business management to explain (1) the status of all current open audits, (2) recommendations as to when to settle an audit (3) positions taken and possible benefits and/or risk involved in taking such positions

Works with both Tax and other business teams to ensure an accurate audit trail is maintained and readily accessible for equipment, service, and contracting jobs.

Develop, document and present tax planning opportunities

Manage external consultant relationships when consulting assistance is warranted

Lead and assist with special projects on an as-needed basis

Manage two people in the state indirect tax audit group including helping them grow professionally and technically and providing guidance and leadership that will enhance their career

Qualifications :

BS/BA in business administration, accounting, or finance. Masters level preferred.

A minimum of 10 years prior relevant experience with sales tax audits

Experience working with all 50 states Sales & Use taxes and applicable Gross Receipts/Excise Tax for state and local municipalities

Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills required

Team player, able to work in a high paced, cross-cultural environment

Hands on, problem solver, result oriented but focused on customer satisfaction.

Experience using sales tax research applications (ie, Checkpoint, TTR, Bloomberg etc .)

Knowledge of sales tax software programs; Vertex is preferred

Detail-oriented, organized, and able to deliver on tight timelines.

Able to analyze and review statutes, regulations, and case law and make appropriate recommendations

Strong Excel and writing skills
