Description & Details:

A Research Scientist position is available in the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials at North Dakota State University in the area of the preparation and characterization of polymeric materials designed for reduced adhesion of marine organisms and ice. Duties will include preparation of coating materials, synthesis of polymers and copolymers, characterization of surfaces using multiple analytical methods, preparation of reports and manuscripts for publication, and presentation of research at national and international meetings. A PhD. In Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Coatings and Polymeric Materials, Polymer Science or related field is required. Also required is a record of scholarly accomplishments as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in high quality journals. Preferred qualifications include: Preparation and characterization of organic and/or polymeric coatings; Characterization of polymer surfaces using atomic force microscopy, nanoIR, contact angle measurements and contact mechanics; Synthesis of polymers, block copolymers, siloxanes, amphiphilic polymers; Understanding of interactions of biological organisms with polymer surfaces; Experience with studies of adhesion to material surfaces (previous work with ice or biofoulants is an asset); Preparation and characterization of materials designed for marine antifouling and/or reduced ice adhesion; Additional postdoctoral experience; Experience with grant writing and project management.

Positions will be initially for one year with the possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funds. Highly qualified candidates can be considered for a research faculty appointment. Minimum Qualifications:

Awarded PhD. In Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Coatings and Polymeric Materials, Polymer Science or related field.

At least two years postdoctoral experience.

Record of scholarly accomplishments as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in high quality journals

Effective oral and Written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in the preparation and characterization of organic coatings.

Characterization of polymer surfaces using atomic force microscopy, nanoIR, contact angle measurements and contact mechanics.

Synthesis of polymers, block copolymers, siloxanes, amphiphilic polymers.

Understanding of interactions of biological organisms with polymer surfaces

Experience with studies of adhesion to material surfaces (previous work with ice or biofoulants is an asset).

Preparation and characterization of materials designed for marine antifouling and/or reduced ice adhesion.

Additional postdoctoral experience.

Experience with grant writing and project management
