Description & Details:

The NDSU Hettinger Research Extension Center research specialist will support and conduct ecological research in agro-ecosystems in the area of rangeland science and wildlife management (birds, pollinators, etc.). They will work closely with scientists to conduct research and oversee field operations concerning multiple projects. In this role, they should be able to work well with others, but also work independently with limited supervision. The candidate should have excellent organizational skills, be able to work under harsh and variable climatic conditions, possess problem-solving skills, and be enthusiastic about natural resource conservation and management. General responsibilities vary from day to day and may include data collection, entry, and analyses, livestock handling, prescribed fire, apiary tasks, overseeing graduate student and undergraduates, maintaining research equipment and sites, overseeing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle operations and assisting with tasks associated with creating publications for refereed journals. Other duties may arise depending on research activity. In this position they will have the opportunity for broad experience related to all facets of ecological research. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to pursue a PhD if desired.

The Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC) is one of seven out-state NDSU research extension centers. The HREC is located in Hettinger, ND. Hettinger is a city of approximately 1,200 in southwest ND. The HREC conducts research in the field of animal science (cattle and sheep), wildlife and range science, agronomy, and weed science. Hettinger is home to West River Health Services - a leader in rural health care in the US, excellent educational, and community facilities, and internationally recognized hunting and recreational opportunities. Work Schedule:

Full time. Monday - Friday. Some weekend required. Some tasks will require long days, early-mornings and late nights.

Advertised Salary:

Commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • M.S. degree in ecology, botany, range management or natural resource management or similar field
  • Proficient computer skills in the use of R, or similar analytical program, Arc GIS, word processing, and Excel, Program MARK and Distance
  • Effective communication skills to include written and verbal
  • Ability to lead and supervise a team of range and wildlife technicians in remote locations
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Possess or ability to obtain a commercial Unmanned Aerial Vehicle license

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with range and wildlife research equipment and research
  • Experience with pollinators and pollinator research
  • Experience in the operation of small plot research and/or farm scale equipment
  • Experience with prescribed fire
  • Comfortable working in apiaries
  • Experience publishing peer-reviewed papers
  • Interest in obtaining a PhD
