POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Fleet Services Attendant Lead performs and supervises routine skilled/technical maintenance and inspection of transit system equipment ensuring that a safe, clean and orderly condition is maintained.  The supervisor will perform the same skilled, manual duties as the Fleet Services Attendants and will organize work activities and provide work direction and training to new attendants.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Responsible for the quality and accuracy of all Fleet Services Attendant’s work and for providing guidance and work direction to other Fleet Services Attendants. Ensure proper operation of technical equipment as it relates to performing job duties. Responsible for the care and safe operation of a variety of equipment with high monetary value.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  1. Using independent judgment provides supervision and leadership to department personnel under the span of control.
    1. Serves as shift supervisor, assigning work to attendants using informed and independent judgment and ensures employees know and follow department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish job objectives and avoid injury or loss;
    2. Participates in decisions on matters of hiring, transfer, suspension, lay off, recall, promotion, discharge, assignment, reward, adjusting grievances or disciplining employees under the span of control;
    3. Sets goals and objectives for others to work towards and monitors performance;
    4. Conducts ongoing feedback, coaching, mentoring, and timely formal reviews of performance for assigned employees;  
    5. Collaborates with supervisor and performs reviews for assigned employees.
  2. Ensures equipment is operational and safe for daily functions.
    1. Performs daily inspections of transit equipment; visually inspects areas for cleanliness and identifies problems in need of repair;
    2. Reports identified repair issues and possible mechanical problems to supervisor;
    3. Responsible for ensuring fare collection boxes have been restocked and emptied according to establish procedures;                                                      
  3. Identifies safety concerns and recommends actions to deter vandalism and other damage.
  4. Cleans and maintains transit equipment and facility according to established guidelines to ensure a safe and clean environment.   
    1. Sweeps, mops, vacuums and removes trash from both driver and rider areas;
    2. Wipe down interior of equipment, driver’s area, fare box, handrails, seats, vents, etc.;
    3. Clean windshield, driver’s interior mirrors, all side windows and doors;
    4. Safeguards transit equipment from damage while operating through automated washing system;
    5. Maintains and cleans work surroundings in designated area.
  5.  Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment as directed. 
  6. Performs minor maintenance/repair activities on equipment such as replacing parts and fluid level monitoring of fuel, oil, coolant, etc.;
  7. Assists Equipment Technicians on minor repairs and preventative maintenance as needed.
  8. Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
    1. Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;
    2. Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work;
    3. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.
  9. Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
    1. Interacts regularly with others in the work unit, the public, vendors or across departments to exchange basic information as requested or as necessary to perform job duties;
    2. Occasionally interacts with others in the work unit, the public, vendors or across departments to exchange detailed and/or technical information where the ability to explain concepts is exercised.
  10. Performs other duties and activities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The job requires a high school degree or GED and four or more years of previous experience in a similar fleet services supervisory position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.  A Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements is required or the ability to obtain one within one year. Training to obtain a CDL is provided if needed.

 Knowledge, skills and abilities include: 

  • Skill in prioritizing and organization;
  • Skill in providing work direction and instructions to others;
  • Knowledge of minor equipment maintenance;
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning/maintenance methods and practices and proper chemical handling;
  • Skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools;
  • Manual skill in performing cleaning and maintenance functions;
  • Skill in operating general computer software programs
  • Skill in communication, interpersonal skills and customer service skills;
  • Ability to supervise personnel in a manner conducive to efficient performance and high morals;
  • Ability to read work orders, instructions, and labels;
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations;
  • Ability to learn new computer applications.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Majority of work is performed indoor in City facilities.  Work is generally heavy with considerable variety.   Daily work involves moving, pushing and/or lifting objects weighing over 100 pounds such as containers of chemicals, and unloading trucks, moving equipment, etc.; climbing ladders, maneuvering in small spaces, Regular operation of equipment such as lifts, snow-thrower, and various manual and power hand tools is required.  There is moderate attention to details.  Working conditions include regular exposure to dirt, soot, oil, noise, extreme weather conditions.  Hazards include exposure to hazardous chemicals, moving mechanical parts, electrical work, climbing on ladders. Activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions.   

Heavy Work:  Physical demands are normally those associated with heavy work: Exerting up to of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in up to of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force regularly or constantly to move objects.
