The Merchandising/Purchasing Analyst aids the DMM, Senior Buyers and Buyers (aka Merchants) in the discovery, selection, and purchasing of merchandise for the ShopPBS website and catalog. In addition, the position plays a major role in the production of the print catalog and securing information and materials for the websites.

Responsibilities include:

  • Communicates directly with vendors and merchants about the upcoming season
  • Follows-up on all product sample requests (where are they, when can we expect them, etc.)
  • Participates in Product Review and selection
  • Responsible for requesting new samples from vendor lines as directed by Merchants
  • Backup contact for both vendors and the internal departments when Merchants are traveling
  • Gathers all information from vendors for the accurate placement of Purchase Orders
  • Ensures that photo samples are correct and to studio by the due date
  • Gathers detailed production information for copywriter and participates in copy editing
  • Secures vendor images and provides to Creative
  • Responsible for new vendor and new item set up and maintenance
  • Responsible for placing initial purchase orders as directed by Merchants
  • Maintains an accurate Excel line list of products which appear in each season
  • Regular communication with Purchasing department when rebuy issues require merchant assistance
  • Some negotiation with vendors for packaging and price
  • Reviews sales, backorder, overstock reports. Follow up on returns and late PO's
  • Participate in team reviews and proofs of the catalog for errors before going to press
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Genuine interest in direct merchandising, gifting industry, retail
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Must be highly organized and able to multi-task
  • Must be very detail oriented
  • Must possess a very solid understanding of MS Excel and spread sheet maintenance
  • Strong phone and email communication skills
  • Fair but strong negotiation skills
  • Exceptional grammar and spelling skills. Writing skills a plus.
  • Must work well as part of a team
  • Must be comfortable with tight deadlines and shifting priorities
  • Familiarity with Public Television programming a plus
