Position Information:

Description

The Department of Civil Engineering within the College of Engineering and Mines is seeking a Research Assistant Professor with a background in multi-disciplinary research. The position is funded through Sustainable Infrastructure Research Initiative directed by Dr. Sattar Dorafshan. The initiative aims to develop solutions through basic and applied research in artificial intelligence, remote sensing, robotics, 3D printing and other emerging areas that can potentially increase the sustainability of civil infrastructure. The position involves working with several faculty members, research associates, and graduate students in a supportive, highly collaborative, and energetic environment in one or more of these research cores.
  • Autonomous systems in infrastructure design, inspection, maintenance, and management
  • Sustainable infrastructure material and construction
  • Environmental monitoring, economics, and societal impacts of Civil Infrastructure

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on forming research need synthesis in the related areas to the Initiative
  • Collaborate on proposal development to secure funding from Federal agencies
  • Guide research projects through experiments and analysis of data;
  • Gather and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in a related field to analyze the collected data
  • Maintain close communications with the Director regarding progress
  • Participating/assisting in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations


Required Competencies

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and reasoning skills
  • Superior oral and written communication skills in English, including public speaking.


Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related areas.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research in the United States.
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-Doctoral experience
  • Experience in developing research proposals for external grants;
  • Broad contextual knowledge of the U.S. infrastructure and their deficiencies (Refer to ASCE Infrastructure Report Card).


Minimum Hiring Salary

The initial appointment is for one year, renewable annually (pending annual review of performance and continued availability of funding). Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with experience

Contract Period/Start Date

Typical work schedule is 8 AM-5 PM Monday through Friday. Anticipated start date, May 1 2023.
