Description

The Civil Engineering Department in the College of Engineering and Mines at the University of North Dakota (UND) invites applications for its 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Civil Engineering to begin in Fall 2023. Candidates may be considered at the Associate and Full Professor level with Tenure based on a candidate's documented record of achievement and subject to approval from the department, college, University and State Board of Higher Education

The department has seen tremendous growth in student enrolment, external funding expenditures, and alumni giving. The Transportation Research Technology Initiative (TTRI), which is a partnership between the North Dakota Department of Transportation and UND is housed in the College of Engineering & Mines. The candidate for this position will have a significant role in the focus areas of the TTRI. The UND Civil Engineering program offers a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE), and graduate programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering (a combined degree program, Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and Ph.D.)

Duties & Responsibilities

The research area of interest for this position includes autonomous systems for transportation condition assessment, artificial intelligence for big data analysis and decision-making cost-effectively, resilient and sustainable transportation infrastructure, intelligent transportation systems, infrastructure need for connected and automated vehicles, advanced material characterization, structural mechanics and health monitoring. The department is particularly interested in candidates whose past and future research will contribute to UNDs Grand Challenges of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Autonomous Systems, and Big Data. More information on the Grand Challenges may be found at https://und.edu/research/grand-challenges/index.html. The successful candidate will teach both undergraduate and graduate-level courses.

The successful applicant will have the following primary responsibilities and duties:
  • Teaching in the area of research of the candidate at undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Teaching typically a 2/2 course load in civil engineering, both on-campus and at-a-distance, potentially including both classroom and laboratory settings (reduced teaching load is expected until the candidate establishes his/her research);
  • Advising one or two senior design groups each year;
  • Contributing ABET accreditation;
  • Mentoring students in course/career planning and fulfilling graduation requirements;
  • Helping with recruiting activities;
  • Communicating effectively in English with students, families, faculty, staff, and other professional colleagues in person and at-a-distance (phone, email, etc.);
  • Utilizing computer hardware and software to carry out teaching and service-related responsibilities that support the civil engineering department;
  • Operating laboratory equipment and instrumentation found in civil engineering laboratories; and
  • Participating in department, college, university, and professional service activities.


Required Competencies

  • The successful applicant will have excellent teaching, administrative, and interpersonal skills
  • The successful applicant will pursue an active research agenda.


Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience in a classroom and/or laboratory setting.
  • Proposal writing experience.
  • Industrial experience in civil engineering or related field.
  • P.E. license, or eligible and committed to obtaining a P.E. license within three years of employment


Minimum Hiring Salary

Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and/or rank.

Contract Period/Start Date

The planned position start date will be August 16, 2023.
