Title: Wind Turbine Technician

Position Type: Contract

Location: Alpha, MN

Reports to: Site Foreman

Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary:

PIC Group is looking for a qualified Wind Turbine Technician to perform outage repairs, oil flush, and maintenance at a large wind turbine farm with over 60 MHI wind turbines located in Alpha, MN. The Wind Turbine Technician is responsible for safe execution of scheduled maintenance, troubleshooting and repair activities, training, and safety exercises. This job also maintains accountability and readiness of plant tools, equipment, and vehicles. The Wind Turbine Technician provides technical guidance to the O&M team, tracks and maintains records of service activities both scheduled and unscheduled through the digital maintenance management system. Previous experience on MHI turbines is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine mechanical, hydraulic and electrical maintenance on wind turbines and associated equipment.

  • Climb wind turbine towers daily, wearing all required safety equipment.

  • Perform electrical and mechanical inspection, repair, component installation, and maintenance of all components of a wind turbine generator and associated equipment, internally and externally.

  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults; repair and/or replace components.

  • Review manuals and schematic diagrams to determine the tasks, tools, equipment, and parts needed.

  • Document all work performed using company's computerized maintenance management system.

  • Maintain company tooling, facilities, and equipment and a clean safe work environment.

  • Follow safety procedures, observe safe working practices and maintain a safe working environment.

  • Complete special projects or various miscellaneous organizational duties as may be requested periodically.


Job Requirements:


  • Solid knowledge base in safety procedures and quality procedures for wind turbine technology

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Must have knowledge in electrical theory and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Willing to travel to various wind turbine locations across the project site.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Valid Driver's License and clean driving record.

  • Proficient knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office software.

  • Ability to learn various software systems to support reporting requirements.

  • Ability to learn various software tools required to support computerized diagnostic and troubleshooting of equipment.

  • Familiarity with maintenance and electronic testing equipment (e.g., voltage testers, amp clamps, megger, calibration equipment, hydraulic torque equipment, alignment tools, and various hand and power tools).

  • Working knowledge applying test equipment and tools for heavy industry applications.

  • Working knowledge of crane use and rigging requirements.

  • Must show competency in working with low-voltage and medium-voltage equipment.

  • Fit for duty test is required with Personnel meeting specified manufacturer weight limits related to the life-saving fall-arrest equipment that must be worn while working at heights. Fit for duty testing is required prior to each job assignment or as needed to ensure Personnel meet PPE manufacture criteria.



Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather, climb ladders without assistance, and work at heights greater than 80 meters (250 feet).




  • Ability to move and manipulate up to 45 kg (100 pounds).

  • Ability to work safely and properly use PPE.



Education / Experience:


  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED.

  • 2+ years of experience in wind turbine operation and/or maintenance

  • Wind technician certificates required include tower rescue, CPR, First Aid, AED, OSHA 10, competent climber, confined space, working at heights, NFPA 70, LOTO.

  • GWO Certified Training preferred.
