Summary

Quality lab coordinator manages the quality lab and gives direction/guidance to technicians under the supervisor of the quality manager. He/she inspects, measures, and provides analysis used to determine if manufactured products or goods meet quality standards. He/she is also responsible for isolating non-conforming products or materials, documenting, and communicating non-conformances to management and technicians.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Gather relevant data and produce quality reports as directed by the quality manager
  • Enforce and follow all quality system policies and procedures
  • Document all audit findings and communicate any non-conformances immediately to the appropriate staff
  • Read blueprints and interpret complex 2D drawings
  • Read geometric dimensions and tolerance characteristics and symbols based on ANSI/ASME practices
  • Verify all measuring equipment meets calibration standards and notify the Lead Quality Technician of any equipment requiring calibration
  • Provide basic quality training to quality technicians, machine operators and other production personnel to ensure that inspection activities comply with the relevant requirements of the quality management system
  • Assist quality manager with quality issues identified by customers; lead initiatives in corrective/ preventative action programs
  • Work with manufacturing staff to solve quality related problems
  • Participate in all continuous improvement efforts in all aspects of quality
  • Perform incoming inspection of materials and components as needed
  • Promotes quality achievement and performance improvement throughout the organization
  • Work with the quality manager to develop a plan for the quality lab
  • Effectively interacts with Production teams to ensure the production of quality products
  • Ensures compliance with national and international standards and legislation
  • Considers the application of environmental and health and safety standards
  • Establishes clearly defined quality methods for staff to apply
  • Defines quality procedures in conjunction with operating staff
  • Creates and maintains controls and documentation procedures
  • Monitors product performance by gathering relevant data and producing statistical reports
  • Collates and analyzes product performance data and charts against defined parameters
  • Ensures tests and procedures are properly understood, carried out and evaluated and that product modifications are investigated if necessary
  • Supervises quality technicians in carrying out tests and checks
  • Works as a backup for a quality technician
  • Follow company policies as outlined in the employee handbook
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Specifications and Requirements

  • Two years of on-the-job experience in the mechanical inspection or a related quality function in the plastics industry
  • A high-school diploma or GED is required
  • Basic proficiency with MS Office applications, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Access preferred
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and the work ethic to consistently complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Basic knowledge of quality terms, definitions, and concepts
  • Understands basic statistical terms and techniques, how to plot data, and how to recognize out-of-control conditions when required
  • Basic understanding of Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) and the team concept for continuous improvement
  • Significant experience with various types of measurement and measurement terminology
  • Must be able to select the appropriate measuring tools and techniques
  • Ability to identify/recognize inspection errors and initiate resolution
  • Understand the concept of calibration and/or experience with gauge R&R
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and know definitions of critical, major, and minor characteristics
  • Ability to use inspection planning tools and perform a product audit; determine the sample size for lots; pull random samples
  • Knowledge of general testing methods is required and knowledge of testing methods within injection molding or NSF/ASTM standards is preferred
  • Ability to identify and report nonconforming material
  • Understand traceability (product, material, and calibration).
  • Strong knowledge of basic mathematical operations and performing measurement conversions; excellent cognitive skills, excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
