Position: Chair, Department of Occupational Therapy

Rank: Associate Professor/Professor dependent on experience and qualifications

Remuneration/Salary: $120,000+, commensurate with experience

This position is a twelve (12) month, special appointment with the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) within the Department of Occupational Therapy.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

Administrative oversight and leadership of the department and its faculty, staff, and students, with ultimate responsibility for the department's budget, program accreditation, personnel matters relating to human resources, teaching, scholarship, and service. Teaching in the areas commensurate with the needs of the department. Development and maintenance of individual and departmental scholarly and creative activity to include research, mentoring of graduate students, and advisement of graduate scholarly activities is a vital aspect of the position. Ongoing record of service to the profession, department, and the university is required to sustain the mission of the department.

The position of Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy will have a number of specific responsibilities, which include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Develop, in concert with the departmental/divisional faculty and other chairpersons/directors and committees, a statement of goals and objectives for the department which is approved by the dean.
  • Collaborate with other faculty, departments and committees in teaching, scholarship and service functions.
  • Provide leadership to faculty members in reference to the development of their scholarship, teaching and service functions.
  • Recruit, supervise, evaluate and document performance of faculty and staff within the department, including assisting faculty in the preparation and evaluation of portfolios for promotion and tenure decisions.
  • Oversee the departmental/divisional course schedules, teaching responsibilities and collaborate with curriculum committees and other school and university components to enhance teaching effectiveness.
  • Prepare an annual budget in collaboration with the Office of the Dean.
  • Devise appropriate mechanisms to encourage the development, by the faculty, of scholarly activity, grant and contract proposals that are consistent with departmental and School goals and objectives.
  • Maintain program accreditation through the Accreditation Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).
  • Assure departmental/divisional compliance with the administrative policies and protocols as outlined in the SMHS and UND Policies and procedures.
  • Preside over departmental/divisional meetings and in other ways promote effective communications between school, university and department.
  • Maintain adequate records of all significant departmental activities and events.

This position reports to the Associate Dean for Health Sciences.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy and holds a current license to practice Occupational Therapy. Must be eligible for licensure in ND and WY with the expectation to obtain a license to practice in each state prior to starting the position.
  • Must hold an academic doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., D.Sc.) awarded by an institution accredited by USDE.
  • Minimum of eight years of experience as an occupational therapist including areas of clinical practice, administrative experience, scholarship and understanding the occupational therapist assistant.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a full-time academic appointment with teaching responsibilities at the post-baccalaureate level and documented expertise in curriculum design, content delivery and program evaluation.
  • Academic credentials consistent with rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Demonstrated peer reviewed scholarly activity in the past three years.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history records check

Preferred Requirements

  • Demonstrated superior leadership ability, communication effectiveness, faculty and student mentoring, and departmental budgeting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective and constructive relationships with academic and clinical settings.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a collaborative and effective school, departmental, and interprofessional team member.
  • Knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy practice and higher education appropriate for leadership of an occupational therapy doctorate program.
  • An established record of scholarly activity and a commitment to excellence in teaching students.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of ACOTE accreditation standards and process.
  • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice and the ability to effectively and respectfully interact with a variety of cultural groups.
