Position Information

We are seeking a full-time Research Specialist to join the Livestock Microbial Ecology Laboratory in the Department of Microbiological Sciences at North Dakota State University. The overall goal of this interdisciplinary research laboratory is to harness the livestock microbiome to enhance animal health and productivity, and thereby mitigate challenges facing modern food-animal production. Expectations for the Research Specialist candidate include conducting a broad range of analysis in the research field of the livestock microbiome, and the specific analysis may include, but not limited to, DNA and RNA extraction; regular, quantitative, and digital PCR; anaerobic and aerobic microbial culturing; tissue cell culturing; and basic next-generation sequencing. This position also carries a field component with participation in research trials involving large animals, including preparing logistics and sample and sample collection. Laboratory management, ordering and record keeping, as well as training and assisting graduate and undergraduate students with analytical laboratory techniques and data collection are expected.

Work Schedule:

The work schedule is for a full-time position and is expected to work from 8 AM - 5 PM from Monday to Friday. However, daily, and weekly schedules can be flexible depending upon specific laboratory or research projects at the time.

Advertised Salary:

$50,000/year

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. Degree in Microbiological Sciences or Animal Sciences, Biological Sciences, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with microbiology or relevant laboratory techniques.
  • Experience and/or willingness to work with large animals, such as cattle, sheep, and pigs.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Have good written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • MSc. Degree in the fields of Microbiological Sciences or Animal Sciences, Biological Sciences, or related field.
  • Experience conducting animal microbiology research.
  • Experience working in a laboratory and desire and ability to manage a research laboratory (e.g. ordering supplies and record keeping).
  • Experience with research trials involving large animals and collection of biological samples, and with in vitro experiments.
  • Desire to learn new lab techniques, have a flexible mindset, and be publication driven.
  • Desire and ability to work effectively with undergraduate and graduate students.
