Position Information

The Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University is seeking a research specialist to a ssist with the design, implementation, and analysis of experiments conducted in association with Fusarium head blight (FHB) breeding efforts by the hard spring wheat breeding program. Areas of research include incorporation of FHB resistance, and improvement of grain yield and quality of hard spring wheat. Assist in preparation of seed for sowing early generation material and yield trials as well as entries in the Fusarium head blight (FHB) and rust nurseries located in the field, prepare associated field books, and take notes on FHB infection in field nurseries at three locations in ND. Manage the mist-irrigated FHB nursery located at Prosper near Fargo, including maintenance of irrigation pipe to supply mist-irrigation, and making sure the mist-irrigation system is functioning properly throughout the disease inoculation and incubation period.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. or equivalent or t wo years of working full time in a plant breeding program.
  • Data management and computer skills.
  • Experience using tractors, combines, and mist-irrigation system. Ability to drive truck with attached trailer, competency with loading, hauling and unloading plot research equipment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and able to work with others in a multicultural environment.
  • M ust be capable of lifting 50+ pounds.
  • Valid U.S. driver license.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Exper ience in field plot research and experimental design.
  • Prior experience working with small grain research in the field/greenhouse.
  • Farm background or farm experience.
  • Supervision of part-time student labor.

Advertised salary: $45,000 +/year

Physical Demands: Operate and transport trucks, trailers, plot sprayers, combine and harvesters. Physically able to perform field and greenhouse research, kneeling and lifting up to 50 lbs.

FLSA: No Overtime
